the more imaginative the better...it's day 3 and I am BORED BORED BORED...house is immaculate, ironing done, about to try bake a cake...as you can tell I need HELP!

Do you like art? reading? Lots of drawing, painting and about 100 books to read!!!!

Is your horse still with you? If so you could spend time with him/her grooming, practising plaiting up etc.

Do you like going out? Most museums and art galleries are free entrance so don't end up too much of an expensive day out.

If you really miss riding you could always have the odd lesson or hack at your local school, or alternatively beg a ride off a friend!

Lol :) My horse has been off for nearly 5 months now and my house is still filthy :o but my horse has a beautifully groomed coat, pulled mane and tail (she enjoys the attention) and I'm converting her to barefoot which I'm finding fascinating reading about both scientific stuff and anecdotal stuff from forums etc. Also had her forage analysed and minerals balanced and then there's always hand picking grass by the bucket full...

Ok so maybe I'm a bit odd :D How about knitting? Or pilates to keep you toned? Or find a horse to share short term?

Can second the knitting! I started knitting last year when I was out of action!

Riding wise - what about finding a good instructor and schoolmaster to have some lessons on? I've just recently had some lessons on an AM schoolmaster and did me wonders!

Help at competitions. My girl had 3 years off following tendon injury. I do endurance, so I spent the time helping at competitions, running a yearly competition (this takes serious amounts of time) & crewing someone else. The crewing was especially rewarding & increased my knowledge, as the rider when from small races to large races (one had 143 starters) to FEI, which is a level well beyond what I have experienced riding. To be part of a competative team at international competitions, against top riders is something else. Okay, I'd rather be riding but as I couldn't this was a very appreciated alternative.

Second the plaiting practice - mine are immaculate now and I can do them STITCHED!!! Yippee!!!

I take it you don't have any darling children... why don't you take up another sport if you can't ride someone elses or help out at shows and things. I discovered windsurfing - I love it now and it is a welcome break from the show season - it can get a bit boring so donning wetsuit, packing picnic down to Poole is really lovely.

Thank you! Pony has just had a bath that I enjoyed giving her more than she enjoyed receiving (!), I have booked a lunge lesson (I'll be wonderfully balanced by the time she's back in work!), made some meringues (actually very simple to make!) & am about to embark on an investigation into bare foot trimming!

I hadn't quite realised how much time our beloved four legged friends take up, I now appreciate my husbands patience with me & the time I spend at the yard!

you could do other things like:

Wash the car
shop for online bargains (my favourite past time :D )
find lots of good films to watch on internet (free and legally ofcourse)
write weekly shopping list using what food you already have (This takes me FOREVER! :( )

Clean tack, wash rugs & headcollars & boots & bandages.
do any DIY jobs around the house, like repaint the kitchen or whatever.
Gardening ? -> planting flowers, de weeding etc.
Clean the windows ?
clear out cupboards (mine are a TIP :( )
Think of imaginitive ways you could save money :D
Go through any junk and car boot sale it ?
De-cobweb house :D

and one for the last few weeks of suffering ! - make up LOADS of meals, so when you can ride again all you have to do is put them in the oven and voilà !

Just realised this is my to do list ...

Learm a new language :-) conversational italian :-)
Mend all stuff thats needing it.
Make a quilt for winter
Study for an equestrian qualification or any qualification !
Decorate your house, or spruce it up
I could go on ........
Make jewellery with horse hair
Take up photography
Write a short story or novel if youre into it
:D:D:D:D:D

Hear Hear! Contact your local riding club - they are always looking for dressage scribes, showing stewards, etc. Especially at this time of year when most clubs are running their big annual shows. You will pick up loads of tips from the judges which can be applied once your horse is back competing.
