Our beloved 20 year old Section D was, at evening stables last Sunday, a bit quiet. Next day, daughter asked me to call the vet as she was concerned about her. Vet (not our usual one, who was on study leave) came out and found she had a very sore gum due to a jagged tooth. Teeth were rasped and bute administered. Next day, Tuesday, pony was much better. Wednesday and Thursday she seemed quieter and so vet was called on Thursday. Whist waiting for vet to arrive, pony was lying flat out in stable, rolling once or twice, trying to pass droppings without success and, when I put my ear against her tummy, no gut sounds. Rang vet and said NhI suspected colic. Vet arrived and confirmed impaction. Lots of fluids administered but by Friday afternoon she was trailered off to Rossdales in Newmarket. There was also a disgusting smell coming from her mouth, probably an abcess, which they will deal with if she recovers from the large impaction. They've mentioned surgery. I'm so worried. Pony was daughter's twelfth birthday present - daughter is 25 this June and now '5'9 - pony is only 14hh, but pony of a lifetime - would hunt all day, jumping everything, just won and won showjumping and cross country, a treasure at Pony Club......A lightweight adult friend now rides her. Anyone else been in this situation? We love this pony SO much!!

Yes, with an 18yr old pony. He pulled through. I very much hope your special boy does as well. He is in the best place, so do try to stay positive.

Sending vibes for him and hugs for you xx

Thank you! She's our special GIRL by the way! We just love her so much! I'll be in the market looking for horse for myself soon and I just want a slightly larger version of this pony - an absolute saint! Just want her to recover! I'll update with (hopefully) progress. Xx

Ah...I'm so sorry.....I must have totally cross thought threads..my apologies. Well, us girls are a bit tougher anyway so I'm sure she'll fight it.

Got my fingers crossed for you! Been there with the impaction colic with my mare, its a horrible thing to go through. She sounds like a strong very loved girl, she's got the best possible chance :) My girl recovered surprisingly quickly but there were a few panicky aaah time to get walking rings round the school at 10pm moments for the first few weeks after.

It's cleared - the impaction has cleared!! Rossdales are checking for tooth abscess tomorrow but hopefully she'll be home with us tomorrow or Tuesday. They have turned her out to graze today so hopefully our lovely pony will be home shortly! Soooooo pleased! X

She's home safe and well! Sadly, had to take our Cushings TB mare, Lizzie, to Rossdales today because farrier was concerned about a foot problem so took TB to be xrayed when we went to collect Rea. X-rays showed further post-laminitis rotation and outlook very bleak. Then "top lameness vet" looked a X-rays and said problem was that our farrier had left toes too long and so their farrier is going to shoe her for the next three months and then re-X-ray. Daughter and I are in pieces. This mare is so special and looks so well. We want to do embryo transfer from her to produce a baby Lizzie. Outlook not so bleak now after "top vet" looked at X-rays but we can't imagine life without Lizzie. I will post separately later as we would like some help on supplements etc.
