I've never had any real opinion on people importing dogs until I got Clover and got into the dog companionship world, but I get why people think there should be a ban or limit on them. Especially with the amount of dogs that will be given up to rescues over the next few months

This might be harsh but it feels very much like people wanting a designer dog for all the wrong reasons

You'd have a pretty crappy gene pool in some breeds without importing.

There are some horror stories, but some people have been importing for years with no problems, one of my dogs was brought in from Germany eight years ago, if I wanted another dog now, I probably would go to the continent when restrictions relax a little.

That's not quite the same though as a van load stacked to the gunnels with mutts.

I must be bored out my my skull today for googling that. Love Island Twitter seems to be eating itself alive and I can't tell if people are angry about teacup breeds, importing dogs from overseas, doing it during a pandemic, dogs as birthday presents, or the fact they carried it to the park. Maybe all of it.

Yup, in a numerically tiny breed the gene pool would suffer without imports, and a particularly bonkers mate of mine drove to the arctic circle and back to import a sled dog for sport and for breeding. Worlds apart from vanloads of farmed puppies but could be affected by any legislation designed to stop those.

And yes smolmaus it's the whole eejit package really, you could get the bingo dabber out on this one.

The puppy in question wasn't in the good health he was said to be in, his skull wasn't fully formed and he came from a Russian puppy farmer (according to the couple). They said "If we had the time again we would have got a dog from the UK or got a rescue dog from the UK."

People like @CorvusCorax are the ones who should import dogs, they know what they are doing and can advance the breed.

Thanks SA, but people need to want to use the dog, and to start putting more emphasis on the selection of breeding females too. The male is only one half of the equation, no point using a fabulous male if the female doesn't bring anything to the table, it's not a magic wand ? and she's the one who raises the pups.
I'll probably get a female next time, for that reason.

I always think it is a shame that people tend not to take bitches to the top level. Tawny’s breeder only breeds once her bitches are at least FTW and Tawny is amazing. Much my best dog.

Slightly at a tangent but on the subject of importing - someone I know fosters pups from a well known charity. They currently have a pup of what I would term a fairly unusual breed who is one of two litter mates who were seized after being illegally imported. I don't know what it was that was illegal but I very much doubt these pups were cheap, but it would seem the importers weren't prepared to do whatever is necessary to keep the dogs.

And back to the original point - someone I know bought an imported C&D dobe from Russia and was surprised when it was guarding the car and trying to kill the spouse at nine months old.

CC, let me know if you want me to collect and freeze my boy for future use.;)

Parts of the US have the problem of imported "rescue" dogs. We have enough hound, lab and pit mixes in the south to last a thousand years. I wish they would move those up north instead of importing poorly bred dogs from overseas..

What is C&D? I'm imaginig a hairy chainsaw with Putin's social graces and acceptance.

RE the puppy in the OP, IIRC Tiffany Puppies has been the subject of a thread on here before.

OK I did a search and the old thread is about Tiffany's Chihuahuas. Just a similar name or an unrelated business?

I would say probably the same, if you google Tiffany Puppies they are in Cheshire too, and Tiffany Chihuahuas is now Tiffany Chis and poms
