Nice and short - I'm looking to perhaps get my second horse straight from Ireland as I seem to find the best ones here are through dealers and they obviously have added their own costs etc on top (fair enough), so I'm thinking why not cut out the middle man..

Which sales are the most reputable - have you ever bought this way? How did it pan out.

Any info / comments greatly appreciated!

Will of course be going with 2/3 very experienced friends and my RI etc etc.

Goresbridge horse sales every time. the 2 big sport horse sales are September (2 weeks) and April. Good quality animals and definitely worth a look. I went to the older horses day in July and there were nice IDx horses going for about 2000-3000euro. Certainly a few nice ones in this catelogue too.

PM me for transporters to avoid!

Might be worth swingiing past Irish equine or Irish imports in Pangbourne Young Irish horses, pretty basic, very open dealer. They make their money on a quick turnaround on green babies. So you could pick up a reasonable 4 year for 2 - 4K. Top price is around the £5k for something pretty special. They are not interested in bringing them on and upping the price its sort of like a dealers dealer. We found them very straight - so for an eg, there was a really nice looking gray horse there - they wouldn't sell it to us it was going back to Ireland as it was a rearer. We found 3 really nice horses there - 1 4 year old just did BYEH and my 5 year old should have done but I wasn't ready!
