I am living in New Brunswick Canada.
I have bought two fabulous Shetlands from a farm in Nova Scotia.
Their parents were imported from the UK.
I would really like to breed from them but there are very few shetland stallions in Canada that I can find and none within a sensible distance.

I would like to know how expensive it would be to import a stallion from the UK to Canada.
I am looking for the transport costs more than anything.
There will of course be all kinds of regulations to get through.

Any one got any ideas?

It will cost you somewhere around $15,000 because you are bringing in a breeding animal. I brought one of our mares over in 2004 and this was the cost door-to-door. Don't be fooled by companies offering "cheaper" prices - they are rarely door-to-door and often have many other hidden charges. If anything goes wrong (as did in my situation - our mare was delayed in quarantine NY for 15 extra days because of the time of year I shipped her) then YOU will have to pay for it over and above.

I imported through the States though because of the quarantine Laws in Canada. If you import direct to Canada then you have to do 30 days quarantine in England and then another 30 days quarantine when they arrive in Canada. In the States there is no quarantine needed in England before shipping, and once in the States, breeding animals remain in quarantine for around 15 days. Then they can be moved to Canada.

You will pay Import Duty on top of this figure above. And I believe there is another tax you have to pay (GST I think) and you pay this on the TOTAL cost of the horse including the cost to ship! We got away with both of these costs as I put our mare in my B4 when we Landed....thank goodness!

a friend of mine has his own transport business and exports horses from the u.k. to canada. if you would like, i can get a rough idea of costs from him... or you can PM me for his name and number and contact him yourself if you would rather.

Thank you both for your replies.

Thank you Kerilli for the offer to find out a ball park figure from your friend, but I won't put you to the trouble as I think it is going to be prohibitively expensive.

Thank you Christiamas for the detalied reply.
I had in mind a few thousand dollars but It seems it would be way out of my league.

Its a shame as my girls are really nicely put together and I love the british native breeds and don't want to cross them with anything other than a UK shetland, not the finer north american Shetland.
Not that there is anything wrong with them. Its just that it is a different breed.

The nearest stallion that I know of is to the west of toronto and they don't usualy service other mares than their own.
even if they did It would be a 20 hour drive so Not very practical.

Thanks again for the info.
