I have a pair of cathedral equine padded reins without the stoppers on them. Literally the perfect rein for me. I love how they mould to your hand. I can smoothly lengthen and shorten my reins with easy and they are very comfortable to hold.

I absolutely detest rubber reins. They are hard and unforgiving in the hand and I have no desire for my reins to be stuck to my hands - rubber seems like an entirely unsuitable rein material to me, I have no ideal why all reins are rubber 😂

I’ve always used leather reins, but now I’ve found the padded leather reins, I don’t ever want to go back to hard plain leather

I now have a second horse who really does look better in brown tack and the cathedral reins only come in black unless I buy ones with stoppers. Vortex also do the same reins, but will not be restocking the ones without stoppers.

Do I just suck it up and get the reins with stoppers? I don’t like stoppers for two reasons - they always seem to be in the wrong place anyway and also I want to be able to smoothly lengthen and shorten my reins without stupid clumpy bits of leather in the way.

I’m not sure why all reins are designed to make the rider hold them at one single length without ever letting go! It’s like they are now to be glued to the riders hand. I feel I am the only one in the world with this issue as well everyone else wants the most grippy reins possible

Maybe there some other types of rein out there that I may like and just don’t know about? Would a pair of plaited reins have a similar feel in my hand?

I don’t want the expense of having a pair made for me by a saddler, but I know it is an option.

I just googled them, they look good - can’t you cut the stoppers off or are they sewn in to the rein? Hard to tell in the photos.

They’re sewn in and if I unpicked the stitching I think that would at best leave big indents at intervals along the reins or at worse open up the stitching underneath and the rein would come apart

I ride in Sabre reins. They are very soft, narrow leather.
But thanks to a previous thread I got a sample of Le Mieux Eventer reins which seemed a good idea as share mare had previously had rubber reins. Clearly some sharers find her hard to stop as there is a fiercer bit hanging with her tack. But no one seems to have found fault with the reins.

By stoppers do you mean martingale stoppers or regularly placed like continental reins??

Watching as I think these might also be my perfect reins. Ive started using cotton reins for hacking and I love them but need something dressage legal, traditional looking and brown.

The Schockemohle reins are nice, and tick most of your boxes, padded, come in brown, beautifully soft, but do have internal stoppers, but you almost don't notice them. Don't know if they make them without stoppers, but may be worth a look?
