Yikes! Just booked mare in to have an improvac jab and I'm a bit nervous now. I know they can have a reaction to it as the vet has warned me. But generally, are the results positive? I'm so done with regumate now, after being on it for 3 years now. It's expensive, and dangerous stuff if you're not careful, and it seems to be working less and less on my mare. So the time has come to go down the improvac route. But now we're booked in, im feeling apprehensive.

My Connemara mare reacted to the 2nd injection, she had a big lump on her chest and she was not happy and walking with her neck stretched out and head down. She had some bute and was quickly ok. However it didn’t work for her unfortunately.

Oh crikey. Did you go back on the regumate?

used to ride some pony stallions that were on it and it always worked and no reactions but unsure if different in the boys?!

My mare had 2 injections last year. No reaction and no seasons ever since so Im very happy with it for her. However my daughters horse has just had a huge reaction to it which required vet treatment. So a mixed bag! I would inject my mare again if needed though x

How did your daughters horse react?

My mare reacted to the jabs. I found they were less effective each time and the reactions worse. We had to stop using them as it just wasn’t worthwhile. They did seem to work to begin with, and this was a mare that regumate stopped working on. She became very stiff in the neck and was unable to graze or drink comfortably. We tried having the injections in a different location but she was still uncomfortable. I believe it’s the adjuvant she reacted to, and has since had similar (but not as bad) reactions to certain flu jabs. So she’s clearly sensitive. On a side note, many of her mare issues have greatly improved since starting Prascend for PPID.

All I would say is be aware that if you ever want to sell/need to sell your mare it should be disclosed as some mares never cycle again. It will Potentially affect her value.

Has your vet explained that if you ever want to breed from her then you may not be able to? It is also I believe not licensed for horses.

Yep to all of that.
She is 16 now and is with me for life (I've never sold a horse) and with so many beautiful foals already out there, I've absolutely no wish to breed from her.
I'm just a bit concerned about her having a bad reaction to the jabs and it possibly not working.

Hiya
She had a temperature and a large swelling on the injection site
Thanks. She's had it now and like yours, she is warm and has an almighty swelling. Seems OK in herself this morning, but good Lord she was like a bear with a sore head last night. The vet gave her an anti inflammatory jab before the improvac jab, and she's now on bute for a few days.

Hi can I ask how it all went with your mare having the injections? Considering doing the same with my mare, thanks ?

Hi. Sorry I didn't see your message.

She's had the two injections now and she really has reacted terribly to both. Both times the swelling and pain were significant, and this time it make her tremble/shiver. She's been on 4 x danilon a day which I stopped a couple of days ago as she seemed fine, but I think I was premature as she is sore again today so I'm just giving 1/2 sachet in each feed = 1 sachet a day, to ease the soreness a little.
I would think very carefully about whether your mares behaviour can be managed in other ways before going down this route. I feel terrible putting my mare through this. Tho I will say she is particularly sensitive so I would hope not every horse would react in this way. Let's hope it works after going through all this. Jury is out as to whether I'll put her through it again next year. If the difference in the behaviour warrants it, then I will. If the difference is negligible, then I won't.

Can I ask how your mare is doing now? Thinking of having this done but would really like some more information on this?
