I had my first trot on our hack today after hock spavin surgery. There was no stiffness and for the first time he didnt try to throw me onto his favourite diagonal.Feeling really positive after time off from bruising, tendon and ligament injuries then spavins .Keeping my fingers crossed one more month of walk and trot then we can do some canter work.Just feeling pleased to share some good news after two years of injuries.

fab news honey

Fantastic news, I'm so pleased for you. Lets hope that by the time the weather improves you can finally have a bit of fun with him!

That's really good news! Bet you're loving just being able to walk and trot after such a long time. I noticed you mentioned that your horse used to throw you on to his favourite diagonal. My horse also does that but i always thought he did it because one of his front feet is a lot smaller due to him breaking his pedal bone as a youngster, i just thought it wasn't comfortable for me to be on that diagonal even though his foot is fine now. My suspicions of bone spavins in his hocks rather than "arthritis" are even stronger now. Thank you for that

Thanks Pidge and Butterbean looking forward to the summer one more month and the vet is out for final check up.Think the jumping will be on hold for a few more months.

Nadine I thought you had him checked for hock spavins /osteoarthritis pm me if you need any info Ill re read your pm cant remember everything we talked about.

Thanks feeling good at the moment just need some more good news with insurance.Ill pm you on that one if I hear anything.
How are your boys Marco and Brooklyn any improvement with the kissiing spine and steroids.

Not good news, Brooklyn has been having physio last few weeks as back muscles were tight, was allowed to ride again this week as he was much looser and softer but he still can't sustain canter on the right rein. You wouldn't think anything was wrong with him to see him in walk / trot / left canter. But it all falls apart in right canter. So vet coming out next week and in all probability he'll have to have the op on his back.

Marco also no progress, still lame, looks like he'll have to be retired, vet says there is little hope of him coming right.

Our world seems to have fallen apart a bit over the last few months.

Oh thats so sad.Ill be thinking of you let me know how it goes with the vet.You know how worried I was re op but it might all work out for the best with Brooklyn.Poor Marco ,keep your spirits up.x

Thanks, yes thought of op is horrible but like you said if it is their only chance then you have to do it. The rehab worries me too. what if he always associates being ridden with pain etc.

I dont think that happens in all cases Ollie has been in the wars for ages and his spavin must have caused alot of long term discomfort. If you are giving him a chance of recovery its the right thing to do.There are a lot of horse that work through pain similiar to spavins I spoke to vet about it when we discussed our options he said they are very resilient and just get on with it because they dont know any different.
Unlike humans they dont bear grudges .
