My mare is a stickler for dropping a pole, I love her as she is safe as houses, will take a miss, won't stop etc just a brilliant amateur horse. She has taken me from jumping 80cm to Bronze League qualifiers. Her only downfall is she isn't the most careful behing (she is very snappy in front).
I am just wondering if there is a way I can help her out/improve her technique.
I seem to have the 4 fault curse atm!

IMO 9/10 poles behind on a horse that is otherwise careful and conscientious are rider error- not enough freedom with the hand, sitting up too early or turning in the air. Some horses have them behind because the canter is tight and so the jump flattens, so loads of work adjusting the canter and keeping the balance up through the shoulders, then lots of gymnastic exercises with cavaletti and bounces, really focusing on keeping the jump in the canter

Great reply from TheMule. I'd just add if it tends to be oxers some careful horses get up in the air but don't get enough travel, coming down on the back bar in which case working through grids over small but wider oxers can be helpful.

Hi guys, took both your advice on board and managed to gain our last 3 DC needed for Aintree champs in November good enough for some prize money along the way!! After as stated above, a four fault curse!
Turns out the horse was never the issue, I was! Thanks again ❤️

It’s the simplest solution at least!! Well done 👍
