I have been thinking of buying a hunter for a while. On Tuesday night, due to OH's sister peeing me off royally I decided to buy one to cheer myself up ;) Wed morning I phoned a dealer friend and an hour later went up xc & hacked a big Irish mare. I knew when I saw her trotted up and ridden by the groom that she was exactly what I wanted  Lets say it wasn't the hardest sale he has had to make. The mare was delivered that afternoon. I have given her a jump in the indoor and a friend described her as 'as handy as a pocket in a waistcoat' :D Have hacked her out in company, alone and took her to a pleasure ride today - she was a star (all be it a keen star who jogged lots - she spent most of her time looking for the hounds) :D I'm sitting here grinning, cannot wait to hunt her & have already completed the entry for a 2 phase in a couple of weeks time. It's been a while since I had a horse purely for fun - No stressage for us!! She shall stand laughing over the gate of the sandschool at the poncy gelding..

Good for you!!

I love impulse buying, I find it refreshing and have brought some super horses by being a bit (ok a lot!) impulsive :D

Have fun and leave the stresage to the others. That includes me as I've got my first dressage test in two weeks time on my boy who's never been to a show before and I've not competed for at least 6 years!

Yes I was being impulsive when I entered the darn thing a few weeks ago!!!

Enjoy! And go IMPULSE!!!!

Still have to do the stressage on the big guy but 'My Dear Mare' & I shall not!! Glad I'm not the only impulsive one on here. Still smiling.

HKJ - Good luck, let us know how you get on.
Dozzie - Keep us posted on your impulse

Your post has just given me a huge grin... I had decided that this time round I would spend months on my horse search, but one of the first horses I saw was amazing, as close to perfect as I think I'll get on my budget. I've seen a good few more since him but not a single one has even been close to measuring up. So today I gave in to my gut (and impulse!) and rang the owner, offered a price which she immediately accepted. Only thing is I am going away next week so ideally have asked her to hold him for two weeks. She says she will, as she said she was delighted I wanted him - she'd decided when I went to view him that I was the perfect home for him... she's agreed that if anyone turns up with a big bag of cash she'll ring me straight away and I have first preference. If I have to, I will take him sooner, but hopefully all will work out. I know it's a bit risky but I don't want to bring him to a new yard, new owner, new surroundings, and then disappear for a few days. If it's meant to be, it's meant to be... I'll be absolutely gutted if I miss out on him though. Fingers crossed, sigh!

So I was feeling very guilty that I had bought so early in the search, but you've made me feel way better. I've owned horses before and as soon as I sat on him I felt completely safe and secure and confident. I took him out on the road when I tried him and he didn't even look, never mind spook, when three barking collies ran after him, or when a tractor and a rattly cattle lorry passed, and he happily took a paddle in the sea.

Pleeeease let it work out! And I really hope yours works out too... thanks for making me feel less guilty!! (And apologies for writing a mini-novel!) :)

That is how she made me feel. Several friends have said the ones they will never forget were the ones they knew they had to have within the first few mins of sitting on top (or even before they got on). Fingers crossed for yours :)

Oh good, I am glad it is not just me.

Saw a horse last week, went to see another today, to compare to the one I had seen the week before, accidently bought it and brought it home today! So not even the one I went to look at to start with.

Hurray for impulse!

I love impulse buying, i read about a horse for sale on the net, sounded great, no piccies, rang owner, drove 4 hours with trailer next day, see him come out the field, knew he was special and paid and loaded him without sitting on him or anything.
To this day still one of the best horses i have ever brought.
Did exactly the same as above with a mare but i did see pictures of her but only talked to the owner by email, drove 5 hours to collect her, again did not try her just caught her in field and popped her on the trailer ended up a fab comp horse and had a lovely foal last year.
And finally, brought 2 mares seen on net, owner was coming my way so delivered them, and i paid, that was mega impulse as when the delivered them they were collecting 2 horses from next door yard so could not of taken them back if i did not like them, luckily they were both broodmares and in foal and lovely horses.
So yes i do impulse buy and to date never let me down, i just dont like dithering, i either want or i dont, but that me

You are all making me feel like a very poor impulse buyer, I was secretly coveting my Ariat jod boots that I bought yesterday, damnit, I should have got another horse! (And a rich husband/wife to pay for it!) :D:p

Well done on your buy, sounds wonderful. I bought my horse on impulse too, went to see one horse, didnt like it,saw this other horse in the field, said oh that coloured is gorgeous, reply from owner, not broken,me I dont mind, they bought him up from the field I said I have got to have him. lol She said he was her baby,by the end of the day he was going to be mine, two half weeks later he was delivered. Never regretted it,neally 6 years on and and hes still lovely.
I think sometimes impulse buying is best. lol lol
Enjoy your new horse and have fun ..
