Hi Guys this is a picture or the shire we bought at aucion the other day. (only went there to get a saddle) She's had a bath and we've treated her wounds and she is much more comfortable.

The plan is to turn her into a riding horse.

more details please? age , what injuries? where you find her? how much lol x more pics

we paid £420 for her, she has what appears to be sever untreated sweet itch and has cuts to her legs and is underweight. She is 8 years old and her pedigree is excellent. I've sat on her and she is indeed HUGE! I don't know where to start looking for a saddle to fit.

oh dear god £420 its heartbreaking for a horse with good lines but hey what a lucky girl she is that you were there. She looks lovely and I really hope you turn her into a lovely riiding horse - mmmmm not sure how to find saddle for a shire but many are ridden nowadays - get advce from Shire society im sure they will have been asked this before lol but to you hun good luck with her and keep us posted and hey what a lovely person you are :) xxxx

Oh what a sweetie, so glad she has you - well done for rescuing her, hope you have lots of fun together, such a kind eye :D

Dread to think where she would have ended up otherwise at that price! I don't know where you would find a saddle that big but am sure your local saddler will help. I have found the Boett style sweet itch rugs have stopped my mares sweet itch as they cover everything including their tummies. Looks like you will need an extremely big rug too! Good luck with her, lucky horse!

Equestrian Clearance often have big rug sizes very cheaply, maybe they'll have a sweet itch rug that will fit her. She looks lovely, I'm looking forward to seeing photos of her when she's all sorted. :D

It just shows what horse prices are.If you got her from auction,no doubt the meat man would have been there, and you outbid him.
Have you thought about a treeless saddle for her???
Good luck,and well done

She is one lucky lady to have you as her new mummy she must've been wearing her lucky hooves that day lol... :D

She looks a right sweetheart bless her I did think she looked underweight but hey sure you'll see her right though she does have a lovely kind eye.

Shire society might be able to point you in the right direction as to getting her a saddle fitted, how big does she stand?
She's probably feeling loads of relief already from having that bath stop the itching poor mite. :(

Please keep us updated with her, so glad you brought her home you would pay ten fold for her usually.

She looks very sweet. I should definitely never go to a sales! Do you know anything about her and how/why she ended up there?

I don't know why she was at the sale. Looking at her passport, she was sold as a youngster and then bought back by the breeder.

I would love to know more, It would help with her education. I have tried to ring the breeder but there is never any answer. His name is Mr M. Lloyd Owen from Angelsey. If anyone can help with information I would be very greatful and so would Dutchess (her new stable name).

My friend's shirexpercheron has a Kent and Masters saddle that fits very well.

She's lovely....you'll have loads of fun turning her into a riding horse!

We have big sweet itch rugs (Boett style) to fit all sizes - we've sold lots to Shire owners. See http://www.solva-icelandics.co.uk/ for details. There's a lot there about the care and treatment of itchy horses too.

We had a couple of shires, and we just used to ride bareback. I have seen some saddle pads for sale which have stirrups and girths attached. Try ebay. There is a shire breeder who has a website that sells these, and other huge tack. I cant think of the name at the momemt but if it comes to me, I`ll let you know.

Ooooh Sprite, get your thinking cap on :p. I have looked at Ebay, but couldn't find much.

Just because a horse is a Shire, doesn't mean it needs a HUGE saddle - friend of mine has just bought a standard Stubben Siegfried, medium width for her 17.2 shire. It is an 18" because the rider needs a saddle that size, not because the horse is large.

You have to fit the saddle to the rider as well as the horse :)

I still cant remember the site name, but found these for you on ebay. They are called bareback pads, and there are load for sale mainly from the states. The first link below is from the UK. There are no stirrups with it, but you can attach them. The second is an example of the ones from America.

Just search for bareback pad on ebay. There are a few.

I had a Saddle Company saddle made to measure for my Clydesdale mare. The beauty of these is that they are not expensive- you might get one for not much more than you paid for Duchess.
Who,by the way,is gorgeous!
