Hello,

Bought this little mini about a week ago from a place that ‘rescues’ horses from travellers/anyone, they had her about 2 days and she was in a bare paddock with about 10 others when we went to see her. She seems to have expanded in the short amount of time that she’s been home and I am wondering if I could have opinions on whether you think she is likely in foal, recently had a foal or simply in need of some TLC.

Thanks!

Hmmm tricky to say - minis tend to get a pregnant-looking belly easier than other breeds (even when quite fit my gelding can look like he's expecting at times...) plus with that background, she may be wormy. Has a vet seen her? If not, I would definitely at least talk to one as worming small ones with a high worm burden can be very dangerous so I would want all the advice you can get. I've known 3 rescue minis to eventually die from complications resulting from too high a wormer dose.

Anyway, ignoring that side point, what do her udders look like? That's normally the real tell tbh.

P.S she's adorable!

Udders appear usual, no swelling or waxing up. She’s lying down a lot but that could just be due to having the chance to relax in her own space after being with lots of other ponies previously? Will phone vet. Only had him out the previous week due to weight loss in our youngster so wanted his teeth checked. He was very specific that he was only coming as deemed it a vital appointment so not sure he’d come out for this but I can only ask! She’s very sweet and has already started to lose the excess coat and get a bit of a shine to her so she’s looking better. Will keep an eye on udders.

I have another mini and he is a bit podgy but she is a totally different shape to him. Almost appears to drop down from her spine so possibly muscle weakness from previous foals?
