i am looking after my friends in-foal mare whiles she is on holiday i also have her geldingf and other mare. she is out with my own in foal mare the problem is that she is showing signs of being in season. should she be doing this as i have never saw this before and should i get her scanned just in case as not sure what to do

Hi

My tb mare who is 13 weeks pregnant was flashing at the old gelding today, got me slightly worried too. Was thinking that i'd get her scanned again to be sure. She was scanned at 28days and all looked fine. It's a worry tho as it's so late in the season to re-try is her foal has been lost.

Hope all is well in there

This does not definatly mean that she has lost the foal. I had a similar problem with my mare around three weeks ago.... and i flapped!
My mare was around 75 days then and was turned out in a mixed field with three mares and two geldings. She was showing no other signs of being in season but was backing up to a rather amourous gelding...... who was mounting her as she stood for him.
Needless to say i did panic initially and had her scanned - baby was still there.

There are a few mares that do show signs of being in season whilst in foal - i was advised to seperate her from the geldings immediately and touch wood - shes been fine since.

If your worried then get her scanned just to put your mind at rest.

Last year I had 3 in-foal mares in the field immediately behind the stallion's turnout. Every day - when he was turned out - they lined up at the fence winking and squirting. He'd say a polite hello and turn away to graze - he knew they were just flirting! All foaled safely this year!

That's slightly reassuring Janet as my coloured mare in fal to Inde was winking a couple of days ago - will get her checked in Sept with all the others anyway - no point doing it any earlier as too late in the season to do anything about it now anyway...

About 10% of mares will continue to show seasons and ovulate throughout pregnancy. As others have said, it's not necessarily a problem... only way to know for sure is palpation/scan. Impressive numbers showing in season Janet... you get all the fun mares!
