Hey,

I'm looking for an in-hand bridle for pony, he has a slightly (ahem!) common head and I think he would look better with a wider flat noseband. Does anyone know if you can get in-hand bridles with that type of noseband (and if so where). Alternatively can you recommend a plain bridle (brown, cob sized) that would also do the job and isn't too expensive.

Cheers

:)

you can get the sabre etons for around 60 quid on ebay, new.. i love mine. they dont come with reins though.

The native pony on our yard has one from Fylde saddlery. Think it was seventy odd quid but resale is probably pretty high on ebay when you're done with it

Ahh, if I had infinate funds ponio would be kitted out head to foot in lovely things from the Fylde saddlery. As it is they're a bit beyond out budget. Cheers tho :)

Just get a hunter cavesson and use that instead of the noseband that comes with an in hand bridle. Whhat size is he?

I thought about that but don't in-hand bridles have slots in the cheek pieces for the noseband to go, to avoid having 2 straps down the face? I may just get him a normal snaffle bridle and then in-hand leather lead. He's a fell pony so takes a cob size.

You can always snip of the headpiece of the noseband so you only have the nose and thread each side through the slots.
If he's a Fell, I take it you want black? If you want brown, I can certainly let you have a noseband, I've got several spares.

I had the Flyde for Stinky when he was young and sold it for a good price once he was an adult and wearing a riding bridle.

Matt Marlow of Hertiage Saddlery also makes very nice in hand bridles with the noseband you want, though he is cheap for the quality, he is not that cheap.

Alternative if he is four, invest your money in a good riding bridle, again I have one from Flyde with a 2" noseband which really suits Stinky's head as he has for a gypsy cob, a very refined head, he does have a large blaze.

I order all my bridles made to measure from Gibsons in Newmarket, and they are amazing. The price varies, depending on quality, from about £50 to about £120 for an in hand bridle. Personally I would not do as above suggests, and just cut up a noseband from another bridle to thread through - in hand bridles are supposed to be fully symetrical, and the noseband in supposed to have two buckles on the actual bit that goes around the nose - one each side. Also, I have not seen many nosebands with the same brass buckles to match a standard in hand bridle. Why not approach someone like gibsons to just make you a noseband for a cheaper in hand bridle? You can pick up a shires bridle for around £20 (cheaper on ebay) and then get a saddler to make you a nice flat noseband to fit it, for probably around the £20 - £30 mark. It all comes down to what you want to spend. My very first in hand bridle was a cheapy from a melton mowbray market (£7) and I then got a new noseband made for it (£10) as I didn't like the stitched one.
