I do very little showing, and I do even less showing that involves me dressing up so HHO shoppers, I'm throwing myself on your mercy.

A local charity show series is holding a special under floodlights gala evening show in April, ending with a concurs d'elegance which can be in hand or ridden. After checking with the organiser, I am allowed to take my Clyde, who goes to lots of their shows, in the concurs in his full show harness (think as much bling as you can fit on an 18.2, then put bells on as well!)

Normally when he's in harness, I wear black trousers, tweed jacket with a tie and flat cap, which is traditional and smart but totally not elegant.

He is bay and white, with four white stockings and white belly, the harness is black leather with red accents and silver (nickle) buckles and heart shaped nickle decorations on the bridle, collar, saddle and various other places.

What can I wear that will look nice, be practical to lead in an outside school and not break the bank? It is only a fun fundraising show but it'd be nice to play dress up for once!

He sounds fabulous, I bet he looks wonderful.

How about wearing a black trouser suit, with a white shirt and red waistcoat, red buttonhole/handkerchief and tie. You could wear a black boater style hat with a red and white ribbon trim.

ETA, will there be photos?

Don't know about your clothes I'm afraid, but I was thinking. Does he work well in plough lines? I'd bet doing a show with you behind him would look spectacular.

From looking at pictures of in-hand showing, the rule for trousers seems to be contrast with the horse.

I.e., horse has dark legs, handler has pale (usually white) trousers; horse has pale legs, handler has dark trousers

Firstly SnowFilly, we NEED pictures of him in his decorated set! (Not for any reason other than I'm a clydie addict)
I have to say I'd be thinking of an outfit similar to the Shire HOYS competitors wear. A black/navy trouser suit and bowler would look lovely, dickie bow in colours to match his decorated set and white collared shirt. It is quite a masculine outfit (although you find the girls/women showing wear the same - Ceri Pleavin was in that outfit last year, I can't recall which other females were showing) but as heavy horses, especially in harness, is a traditionally a man's game I would follow that line. The other thing I would consider is to dress as a coaching footman however this is not going to be a cheap look to do unless you know someone who will lend you the gear.
If you do a bit of a google dig then some good pictures come up, past winners include metheringham upton hamlet with Paul Bedford and Martin Fountain with Woodhouse Calendar Girl, both will bring up some lovely pictures under the spot light to give you an idea.

That's goes completely out the window when it comes to Concours and evening performances!

I'd go for some seriously wide leg trousers - floor length (concours is supposed to cover the feet)

Yes and make sure full arm and neck/shoulder is covered. You don't need to go up the neck but defos no cleavage for Concours and always wear gloves.

Evening performances are different again and you can go tight sparkly cleavage for that!
