Just got a new book, Schooling Excercises in Hand. Tried it out today, obviously basic moves. The first time I asked for neck bend I could hear cracking in his neck! Well pleased. Just what I need to rekindle interest having not ridden consistantly for the last year or so. My boy is now 20 and so this, I feel, is a good way to get back into the swing of things with no pressure on either of us. No saddle required, only a bridle so I can do it any time no matter how grubby/wet he is. Bridle easy to clean and as no pressure on it doesn't matter if mud underneath (not ideal I know). I have him turned out and unclipped for as long as feasible, hopefully all winter.
He did look sulky when I produced the bridle but soon decided the excercises were easy and cooperated very well. I took him for a walk in hand on the road (new to unshod) afterwards, which he enjoyed. Popped along with a spring in his step.
