So it's a lovely day and I will be heading to the yard this evening around 7pm for my hour of exercise. Horse will be exercised too ;)
Just had an idea that it would be nice to do some work in hand for a change. I need some inspiration.

What's your favourite exercise?

I usually do a bit of shoulder fore, and as mine can get a bit tight behind I do some turn on the 4hand and walk across poles straight first then sideways so she has to step the hind leg up and across the pole laterally.
Also raised walk poles (I use 3 of my foot steps for distance) and make them higher gradually.
Xx

Oops I saw this a wee bit late!

What are you looking to achieve? Are you after groundwork horsemanship type exercises, classical in hand or polework type stuff?

There are so many things you can do on the ground that it's good to have an aim and something to work towards same as riding :)

At my really basic level I like using Oliver Hilbergers exercises and often find that after about 10 minutes we can even play at liberty which is fantastically fun and my horses seem to enjoy this and find it motivating and interesting, :) I like to do some very basic in hand exercises then I tend to just let the reins lie on the horse's neck and see if they are interested in working at liberty. It's often not quite as tidy (especially at my level lol) but I have found it lovely to engage with the more spontaneous offer that horses can give in that situation. I often use raised or alternate end raised poles, turn on the forehand, turn on the forehand, perfectly square halts and lots and lots of transitions. Shoulder in and leg yielding can also be really interesting to try in hand as it is easier, I find, to see subtle errors on my part. My only 'tip' (love that I might even have one to suggest!!) is to have a good schooling whip so you can be really clear about what exactly you are asking for as I find I can be a bit 'muddled' and don't like to have to use a strong contact in hand (or under saddle actually) . If I am using a cavesson, then a schooling whip is even more handy tbh but you probably have all this sorted tbh!! Just hope that anyone playing with this might find it helpful somehow.

You know what, I don't even know! I'd like to identify a few exercises to work on suppleness and strength. So totally open to ideas. Basically work but from the ground. He has improved massively and just in our current situation, trying to think of ways to add variety. Totally open to suggestion!

There are so many things you can do but to start with you just need to get used to where to stand, which direction to face etc.

Make sure the horse walks when you walk and halts when you do. Do some circles, turns, serpentines, yield the hind quarters, yield the fore quarters and then you can move on to lateral work
