Hello,

I have lurked this forum for years but finally feel like I need to make a post because I can't find my answers via google or searching the forum.

I have a 2 year old perlino PRE filly that I would like to get out to some shows next year. Since it's coming up to my birthday and Christmas I thought I might add some showing equipment to my wish list.

For standard youngstock classes I think that I can get away with a snaffle bridle with reins over the head. Please correct me if that's incorrect.

For foreign breed classes, I have read in some places that you should show the horse how it would traditionally be shown for the breed. Does that mean that I ideally should show her in a serreta with a show browband? That should go with a short lunge line or ideally a long leather plaited lead rope? For a Spanish presentation you'd carry a whip but that wouldn't be correct for an English show would it? I know that normally you're only allowed a show cane.

If I have that all wrong please can I have suggestions as to what's correct and any images of the correct style of presentation halter or bridle would be much appreciated.

Would I wear standard showing attire? Black trousers, pale shirt, tie, tweed jacket etc? What style of hat is correct? Although I will be wearing a hard hat for the first few shows at least.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I entered a local show’s foreign breed in hand class for fun once. Little did I know that it was going to full of Arabs, whose owners then proceeded to wind them before going in so they were snorting and prancing all over the place! Made mine look like a donkey 😂
Whenever I did local foreign breed classes I was normally the only one with an Arab I was always up against mainly warmbloods 😆

I only know Morgans. When entered in a Foreign Breed class at a normal show they wear the Morgan bridle, with a patent leather browband and the leader wears what they normally would for their own classes, which would be black trousers, white shirt and tie to match the browband and a black waistcoat and probably black gloves.

A bit according to age, so the younger ones would wear a snaffle, the older ones and stallions would wear the "normal" double bridle.

But they don't get a groom behind and they tone it down a bit.

In your case, so long as you are keeping to the show rules regards whip, etc. then a bit of bling would surely be eye-catching?

Oh no! She already looks like a donkey without any help. She has huge ears! I'm hoping that rule about trying not to look at them too much until they're 3 will work for her. 😄

Big ears are really prized, especially for PRE mares!

The full showing outfit for handlers in PRE classes will set you back quite a bit, not sure I'd bother just for a Foreign Breeds class. The currently fashionable headstall is simple and available from various online tackshops (see Viva Iberica, link above).
