I'm showing in hand this weekend and my lad is ridden in a loose ring snaffle. All the pics I have seen of in hand classes seem to have horses (not ponies) in double reins.
I don't want to start messing about with a double bridle at this stage, so could I stick with the snaffle or should I use a pelham with 2 reins. What would be more correct ?

What's the class Kauto Star? Generally, youngstock are shown in snafles or in hand bridles and broodmares in doubles/pelhams. Snaffle is generally fine unless broodmare

I looked at the breed show pics from last year and some of the geldings are in doubles and some in snaffles. but interestingly all of the horses shown in double reins were placed about those not. Just wondered what was deemed 'correct dress'.

At that sort of show I would say that it would be the norm for horses 3yo and over to be shown in doubles (or a pelham). It probably isn't in the rules, but in my experience of showing, doubles are always seen as the correct attire, whether in hand or under saddle.
