Just after opinions and thoughts..there is a local Riding Club Showing Show in a couple of weeks and I'm thinking about taking my gelding to do an in-hand class. He is a big strapping 17.2 Warmblood, but having looked at the schedule I think the only class on offer that we could possibly enter is the combined Hunter/Riding Horse ( there are no sub sections or height restrictions).
As I am a complete showing novice would we be ok in this class or laughed off the showground!!!

You will be fine just make sure he is ' dressed' correctly tack wise. Hunters tack will be different to riding horse tack. If he is strapping it sounds as though he will be a ' hunter'.

I wonder if you’re near me as my local show has that class? It’s a bit confusing and I wish they’d just do a riding club
Horse class. I entered it last year and there was a wide mix of types including a Friesian and a cob. Mine is KWPN and I’ve had one judge say he’s riding horse type and one Hunter type. He’s probably somewhere in the middle. It was won by a very nice young hunter type. I wouldn’t worry too much especially if you’re just doing it for experience and a bit of fun.

It sounds like you should be fine in that class. As Fern said he'll probably fit into the hunter category so if possible he could do with the corresponding tack.

At a Riding Club show they shouldn't be as strict about types etc.
