My 12 yr old son is showing his shetland in-hand on Sunday at a kiddies show he is wearing waistcoat, trousers, shirt and tie but does he need to wear a hat i;e riding hat also for the shetland is a leather headcollar ok or does he have to wear a bridle its only a bit of fun but a first time for us all

Some people show in a soft hat however I always used to wear a riding hat. It is not unknown for a pony to get loose and start kicking out at other horses/people so it is best to be on the safe side. Enjoy and let us know how he gets on.

Thank you he is so exicited he was doing the show jumping but his pony was injured in the storm just over a week ago so i entered the shetland for him to take his mind off his pony so want to get it right for him.
I was wondering about the safety side of things was not sure if it is different with children than adults.

No advice I'm afraid, but hope he has a lovely time, and that his pony recovers quickly

Thank you so much mrsmozart and i hope you feel better soon after your tumble.
Will let you know how he gets on.
His pony will be ok in time but looks very battered at the moment they went through two electric fences then barbed wire his pony has very bad cut on hind leg also took half his face off poor thing looks very unhappy at moment bless him just hope shetland behaves he is alittle devil at times Lol

Check your schedule - quite often it will state that those under the age of 16 must wear hats that conform to safety standards.

Head collar will be fine at a local show - so long as he can stop!

He could wear a tweed cap which would look nice with the rest of the outfit. However, do check the schedule as a lot of places state that children must wear hard hats when showing both ridden and in hand.

Head collar should be fine as long as he has control, if not use a bridle.

Have a great time and I hope he gets a nice ribbon at the end.

Probably safest to put him in a hat. I wear a hat when showing our youngsters

Not sure about headcollar, if you have a plain snaffle bridle, use that!

Hope he has a lovely time!

I have a little bridle he can use would normal reins be ok or do you think i should buy a in hand leather lead rope dont really want to spend a lot as this is a one off but would love for him to have some fun
I think i will go with the hat to be on the safe side have checked schedule it says hats must be worn for all ridden classes.

Inhand and lead reins is correct for youngstock. If the pony is over 4, then a bridle with reins is correct.

I know at a lot of affiliated shows, they do insist on under 18s wearing hard hats when handling as well as riding and it is probably best to wear one in case something in the ring turns into a nutter.

Which show you going to? im going to trottercliff this sunday

it says in the rules hard hats are to be worn when mounted etc and the use of safety equipment is never penalised. I think its better to be safe then sorry
