I have a part bred, young, coloured arab

I was going to show him at county shows this season, he has a AHS passport and is CHAPS Registered, I have become a member of CHAPS so we are all ready to go however......... I have never done in hand at this level and through other people I'm pretty confused I've been told that I have to wear colours that complement my pony, also he is classed as a non native...right?

My first show is next month and I'm completely freaking out so any advice on show bridles, clothing, secret 'keep clean' tips any advice at all will be muchly appreciated ..... give me a ODE event anyday

thanks people much love

Yes he is classed as non native and should be plaited tail pulled and cut straight at the bottom, I don't know a great deal about chaps in hand showing so I would look for a recent show on line and look at the photographers gallery for that show to give you an idea, if it's the same as most other in hand it's dark trousers if the horse has white legs light trousers with dark legs, a shirt and tie tweed jacket or waistcoat, short boots and a hat some wear beaglers or a tweed type hat.

someone may be along with more proper chaps knowledge I only show Arab purebreds so do know a bit about showing part breds.

Turnout for the horse, if an adult then normal riding bridle with reins over head. Better if double or Pelham and with two reins. If a youngster then an inhand bridle would be more suitable.

If horse is a finer type then it should be a fancy coloured browband and a more delicate look. If horse is a heavier type then plain browband with wide flat noseband.

I have a few coloureds and have found the best shampoo to be Gallop stain remover. Good price and really lifts the stains. I then finish with a purple or blue shampoo to get the bright white look. If horse has white legs then I make a paste from supreme leg and body whitener, apply all over the legs and bandage over night. Take off bandages at the show, quick brush out and lovely white legs.

A cheaper, much better version of supreme products powder is Sheep Face White btw. I apply it to every white bit of my skewbald, with a spongey/clothy thingy, whilst he is still wet from his bath. Leave it on overnight, brush off the body in the morning so it's just the legs to do at the show and make damned sure no one pats the white bits! White powder explosion alert! The sheep face white has a slight bit of dye to it so the white bits come out brilliant white. But shhhhh! It's a secret!

I always say the same but take a look at Equinational and ES Photography web sites - those are the professionals so copy their turnout. ;-) When I first started showing a learnt so much from being a photo snoop!
