Ok, so i *think* I am going to dare brave a small and fairly local (Monk Fryston Leeds if anyone knows it) in hand showing show next sunday with my 2 yo. I have never done an in hand class (well bar bonny pony when i was a kid!) and he has never been out to a show either so I have nooo idea how he's going to be.

I am currently practising some trotting up etc in his bridle which we have been trying out on him for a few weeks now and he seems ok just a bit mouthy still but fairly accepting.

However, I need a little advice re ME! Having read some posts on here I have gathered that, due to him having white legs I should wear dark trousers so I think I'm ok there. What else do you wear though? What's the norm - shirt and waistcoat? Jacket?

Plus, if any one has any tips, advice and experiences from their first outing with their youngsters it'd be appreciated!!

I think I definitely prefer being sat on board I tell you - far less stressful than this in-hand stuff!!! Lol

Oh I think we are going there too! Not sure what classes yet as I haven't seen a schedule, but probably lead rein and m&m!!

Can't help you out much on the what to wear issue as I tend to stick a pair of black jods on (palomino) and a black jumper....we are just starting out with shows and happy to get a bit of experience.

Best of luck!! :)

yeah, I'm really doing it just to get him out to see the big wide world a bit more but i also don't want to look like a complete div at the same time! ha ha. if it does totally blow his mind though i won't enter a class and will just wander him about for a bit instead. Am hoping it's just a very small show!

I may yet change my mind as we are going to a small show this sunday, first in a couple of years and first with pony travelling on his own *scared* lol.

I am quite content to be a complete div, you will be able to spot me a mile away :D

Ha ha - I think I am more concerned I will trip over my own two feet trotting him up (or he'll trip me up) and I'll fall flat on my face!

I show my section A mare..
Don't go first into the ring, hang back and join behind a couple as I found it less nerve cracking!
Also teach him to stand up nicely, it really does make a nicer image overall, I found that teaching my mare to back up tiny steps till she stood as I wanted worked as she soon would stop relatively square without too much faffing.
As for yourself, enjoy it!

We have been working on the halt for a while but it isn't his favourite pastime it has to be said! He can do it but he can get in a bit of a strop about it too. He's 15.3hh so that doesn't help! I think I shall definitely follow some others in though. Even though I know I am only going for fun and experience for some reason i actually feel a bit nervous. i guess it's going in to the unknown. Hopefully once i've done this first one I will have experienced what his worst behaviour may be!!!

if you can get a few people at yr yard together and in the school pretend its a class walk round, then stop and the one in front trot round to the back, then line up all walk out halt for 30 seconds and do a trot up, if you can get a group together this will be your best practice, as yours is a baby, wanting to stand will be a no no, and when a horse goes off wanting to go to will be a yes please!

Sadly I am not on a yard. Just out own stables - I was going to head to the local livery stables tonight to use their school but couldn't so used our neighbouring farmer's field as nice and flat so practised his trotting up, standing etc. I know actually he's not really that badly behaved but he does have his own ideas on occasion. I don't think he'll care too much about others trotting away from him or anything (we'll see though!). Hmm, maybe I shall do a 'mock up show and get my mum, dad and sister to get the rest of our clan and we'll do a mock up 'show' in the field at the weekend........

Hmm, may be a good plan!

I think his standing is 100 times better than when I got him last summer but i guess it's like puppies or young kids, standing still is very boring!!!
