So there's a SORCY show coming up, and apparently they have M&M classes. My poor chubby lump isn't up to much else

Sorcy is like the Pony Club, but a little more local, so's not really too posh.

But what on earth do you wear to a show?

And will M&M be mounted or in hand? And in an in hand show, do you just stand there, or do you have to run around? And do you take the saddle off? (Jayjay has the most horrible saddle, we're getting one made when he slims down, but it's all plasticy and makes wierd noises, and although it just about fits him, it's really a bit narrow in front)

If it doesn't specs inhand or riden then either. Yes you have to lead the horse up trot him up etc for the judge. Inhand wouldn't have a saddle just a headcollar/inhandbridle or bridle *Thinking inhand be your best bet* What breeding is he? Look on the breeds website on turnout.
 
The schedule will tell you if it is an inhand or a ridden class.

For inhand, ideally you should wear:

Trousers which are the opposite colour to your horses legs (ie if your pony is dark, wear light coloured trousers, and vice versa)
Shirt
Tie
Tweed
Either a riding hat or a trilby/panama type hat - definitely wear something though!
Sensible shoes, ie short riding boots.
Gloves
And carry a cane with you

Pony will need to be in a bridle.

For the actual class - you will:

All walk round together as a group. You will then stop in one corner as a group, and then individually trot round to the back of the line - one thing I'd say about the trot is to really try and get your pony trotting as freely as possible without cantering; you want to show off your pony's paces as much as possible!

You will then usually be placed into a line up; however occassionally you may just be told to get into a line in any order.

You then walk forward to the judge individually - stand your pony in front of the judge (as squarely as possible) - the judge will take a good look at your pony - they will be looking at their conformation.

Then you walk away from the judge, turn round (clockwise) and trot back towards the judge - keep trotting round to the back of the line, and then take up your place in the line. Trot straight towards the judge - they WILL get out of the way, and they want to see how straight your pony is in front.

Once everyone has done their individual bits you will usually have to walk around once more before being pulled into the final line up and placed.

Hope that helps - we do a lot of inhand showing with our Dales ponies, I love it (unless I have a mad hairy yearling on the end of the rope!)

Very square (was entire until 5 years old) and mouse dun in colour. He's won some quite big shows as a youngster, so he's an old pro and will be helpful, I hope

He shouldn't have his mane too thin, and his tail shouldn't be cut either. Or his feathers. And he shouldn't be clipped. Which he's not

I may have to do something about his mane, though, as it's thicker at the top then at the bottom and looks a bit untidy.

We bought him a new Rhinegold bridle yesterday, which suits him and should be ideal for showing.

I have fawn joddies and a white shirt. And chaps and jod boots ;_; Aww, they're so unflattering! I don't have a tie, but I can improvise, and I have two hat silks, one navy, which I'll probably use, and one pale lavender, which matches his headcollar, if we show him in that.

Should I wear my chaps, or just my boots? I could elasticate the bottoms of my jods so no ankle shows

It's quite a long hack to get there (we don't have transport) and it wouldn't really be worth it in rain.

I don't have a cane, either, come to think of it o_o Would a discreetly coloured schooling whip do? Black or navy?

I'm hoping to go for a bit of a theme. Navy hat, navy gloves and navy stick?
 
He's better in collected trot - His fat doesn't wobble so much then, and he arches his nack and is really... Compulsed, even if he doesn't have a bit. He's so gorgeous though - If you dismount and let go of his reins in the arena, he'll follow you around and copy your leg movements exactly - if you halt, he'll literally stop dead, so he only stays a few feet behind you, but if you jog he'll trot

I'm going to make a complete idiot of myself xD I'll probably fall over, or forget I'm holding an ice-cream or something dumb like that!

What should I do about his coat, though? It's a bit scruffy, and he's got a bald chest where the rug rubbed, and the hair on his neck is different to the hair on the rest of him, because it's been exposed to the weather, as he doesn't have a neck cover on his rug, and it's fluffier and paler...
 
Yep - don't touch his mane or his tail with anything sharp! We use a bit of baby oil the day before the show, it will really help to make it shine!

Definitely try and get a tie - ebay or charidee shops will have them, they are inexpensive. Ideally you should wear light coloured trousers that aren't jods - ie cords - however if you don't want to fork out for them then jods will be absolutely fine - don't wear them with your chaps - and if you can get hold of some jodhpur clips that would be ideal! I would definitely put him in a bridle rather than a headcollar - it looks much more professional.

A tweed would really finish it all off, if you could get hold of one (again, Ebay!), but if not then don't worry too much. A discreetly coloured whip would be absolutely fine - make sure it's not too long though - normal whip length; most schedules do have a limit on whip length allowed in the ring.

Navy hat silk most definitely, and navy gloves would be fine

There's not a lot of point going unless the weather's good, because of the journey, and it really depends how Jayjay settles in

For the rug rubbed bits you can get stuff called MegaTek which helps the hair grown back. It is quite expensive though. I use cocnut milk out the supermarket (comes in a tin). If you rub a bit on all the bits where his rug has rubbed should help it grow back.

With his mane & tail give them a good wash. Then use a fair bit of de tangler spray and your fingers to ge the knots out. If you try using a hair brush on a highland mane it never gets you very far as it's so thick. Can take a bit of time but always worth it.

Baby oil all over? Even on his winter coat? I can get some from the super market...

We really need to get him shod, come to think of it. It makes him look much neater.

Just on his mane and tail! Once you've detangled it, run a bit (not a lot) across his crest and then work it in, and the same for the tail. We also put some in the Dales' feathers as well

If you don't have a jacket go try and get a smart waistcoat - a lot of M&M people show in a waistcoat and trilby - I use a trilby and a tweed jacket with mine.

Do not show in your lilac headcollar - really not the done thing

A navy hat is correct for ridden.

Have everything as clean and neat as possible.

This is my get up - I got the hat, jacket and trousers off ebay for not that much. For a native tweed is correct.

Also have a bridle with a thick hunter type noseband if he has a cobby head - this is what I have changed to and it suits mine far better.

Trotting up - if possible match your legs to the horse - managed it in this pic, but Chancer should be a little more forward - he is only a baby and has a lot of improving to do.
