In-hand showing

I have got an in-hand show on Sunday and have just realised that my boy wants to be very close to me when we are leading (by very close I mean trampling on me!). I spent some time this morning persuading him to walk beside me but a good arm distance away by carrying my cane in the hand nearest him and prodding him in the shoulder with it if he came too close. He was getting the idea but I wondered whether anyone else has anyother methods they would share?

Hold a hand at head height, it normally works and can help turn them away from you too.
