hi,

the vet came thursday just come for marleys routine injection...and i had a funyn feeling the past 3 weeks hes goit a sore back but im no expert so i asked her to have a quick look in which she did and confirmed he does have sore back muscles mainly on his wither (left side)

hes currentl been out on work just under 2 weeks and i plan to keep him out of work (saddle wise) untill hes better...... hes currently on box rest for the next 2 weeks and then he will be on limited turn out (on a way this is brilliant can finally sort out his mudrash and hair los!!, and weight loss)

but while all this is going on im wondering what to do with him...

iv taught him to back up from the lowering of my head he also trots when i jump and stops dead from any gait when i face him (pretty cool) he also gives kisses now and im in the process of teachin cuddles....he can also lower his head for the head coller!

just wondering what i can do lunging wise to stengthen his back muscles?

thanks :)

Ps when i restart him ill be doing it bare back with lots of comfy numnahs! for my benifit and his lol!!

then ill reintroduce the saddle when hes ready as he throws his head at it currently

Basckground is that 1 year ago i didnt realise his saddle didnt fit so 8 months later (oct 2011) i got saddler out to fit it properly and he did but i carried on riding thinging he was ok then at the end of jan he started to buck a little and then begining of feb he started not wanting to work which is not like him at all...so the vet believe that i should have gave him the winter off ifi had known (which i didnt) but at least hes getting the rest now

thanks xx

I'd get a physio out too. As for exercises, do carrot stretches. They're good for their backs - my physio told me to to do them when my mare had back issues in 2010 and I still do them about once a week with her now, although I used to do them daily when she had her back problems. Hope your horse makes a speedy recovery :)

hi thanks for the reply everything been done had a physio out and she gave me loads of tips and stuff on what to do massaging ( i have a massager that i have lent) and tail pulling and lifting him with lead rope steching out him back by lifing his front legs and bring them foward and loads of other stuff..

he doesnt do well without work and neither does his weight so im just wondering what tiype of work i can do that will also help his back.... we have been walking out in hand and trotting he gets very excited!

is rtroting poles good for helping him work long and low?

xx

If he is sore in his muscles they need to be treated with some physio to get them functioning properly again, box rest is usually the worst thing to do for any muscle soreness, unless it is acute, walking round with his head down eating grass will be of more help.
I would get a good physio to him, the vet should refer you to someone they recommend, once he has had treatment you can get on with building up his muscles again .
In the meantime carrot stretches are good, I would not lunge until he has been treated.

thanks for the reply iv had physio out twice and she just said if i carry on what shes doing for the next 2 weeks he should be fine to lunge in walk....

also hes only on box rest as he has mud rash and hes getting walked out for grass 3 times a day :)

i just want to keep him entertained and do the best i can for him.

iv also got some gel that was recommended by the vet to sooth his muscles :)

I see you have had the physio, so why is he on box rest, my physio would have a fit if following treatment the horse was stood in a stable she insists they go out even if just a few hours each day. I also am unsure why he is not being worked, again physio usually says one day off, in the field, then back to work lightly and build up over a few days. Most horses will need a second treatment within 2 or 3 weeks before everything is sorted, unless there is an underlying problem they are back in full work in no time.

he is on box rest at the moment due to bad mudrash and a lot of hair loss so id liek to sort this he gets turned out in a very samll paddock 3 times aday where theres no mud (rest paddock) also physio said his back is very sore as did the vet and recommended a good few weeks off before i start proper work with him again!

plus hes still very sore as he throws his head at the approach of the saddle i unerstand this may be remeber pain but it may not be.. also when i put a rug on or brush him the first few times of this he attempts to bite me, and has scarring on his wither (white hairs ) so id prefer to err o the side of caution and take my time with him

plus id love to spend the time with him on the ground non riding :) fab oppertunity :)
