Riders sometimes change their colours! Ruth Edge's a perfect example

Aww, what a shame

He obviously doesn't have much luck at corners because he banked that one. Flew the first combo beautifully though...

Vicerage V isnt a corner though and it had nothing to do with him not having any luck at a corner really bless him, just a freak accident he did all he could

RIP xx

The guy has exactly the same hat silk on as he did at Badders, just a polo shirt instead of a long sleeved top

Not a freak accident, shoot me down but the rider got his line wrong, you could see that a mile off. The V V rides like a corner, hence its name.

I really dont think the rider got his line wrong. The horse jumped then veered off right, ALOT of horses were doing it veering off to the right some just completely missing and jumping the ditch.

Anyway Jean must feel absolutely sick and horrid after the accident who are we to criticise his line in to the fence, was a complete freak accident.

And I think we should leave the horse to rest xxx

I was there!!!

I was standing right by the fence I saw everything the line in, the accident, the blood and the after treatment

Quite. You didn't see every horse shown jump that fence and the line they were taking. Jeanette got it spot on. Dominic and Andrew got it wrong, you could see about three strides out.

I'm sorry but when watching from the ground in RL you often miss things.

It certainly does look like him, bless him, such a magnificent looking animal. I have to agree with severn miles that watching it on the tv it seemed a bad line to that jump, you just dont know what could have been, but i was watching intently on the tv, face on as this poor animal had this deadly accident, RIP Icare A'uzay x

Y'know, he probably did get it wrong, but the horse is dead and to quibble JLB's split second decision to go on whatever stride he saw as available is pointless after the event.......
I expect it will be replayed in his head long after this forum has forgotten the horse's name........

SM you are right, the line wasn't a good one and looking at the frame by frame stills the horse knew it and tried to do its best
frown.gif
Had the fence been 3 ft longer here wouldn't have been an issue, as it was, well, we know the outcome
frown.gif

I still think it was a freak accident though. Yes the horse veered off/rider got the line wrong but how many times has that happened at that fence over the years? I watched the tv coverage of Badminton today and I'm sure at least one other horse knocked the flag at the vicarage vee and it just fell to the ground.

i was stood by the stewards landies (where the horse ambulance came out) i honeslty could not say if it was a bad line or not (not to discredit anything written here) for the angle i saw was spot on, but i WAS stood at an angle. could it of been prevented? i dont know. did the horse have trouble with fences like it or his rider? i dont know. What i do know, his rider gave his heart to to Icare on the day, and Icare gave his heart back... a very tragic accident. He was a stunning sight of beauty, and may he RIP. He didnt deserve to die in such a manner, but what we will remember, for us that stood at the fence, and those who watched on TV, that he was a noble and gallant lad that gave his heart to US. that should never be forgotten.

the type of horse that will saty in our hearts for ALL the right reasons

Exactly. And over all its Badmintons fault for not having the same flagging system as WEG had on the skinnies last year. RIP Icare and my thoughts are still with Jean.

Well said F and his sad loss should atleast sort the flagging out and prevent others from a similar fate.

in H&H Badminton spokesperson, julian seaman quoted something along the lines of of i dont think its rocket science for WFP to suggest bendy flags

well Mr seaman, if it is not rocket science to advise that these put in place, i am sure it would not be rocket science to put these measures in place. all events have a responsibilty to make sure all horses come back home safe and well.

[ QUOTE ]
HJ, have you watched it on tv? I said to mum he's got it wrong before he jumped.

[/ QUOTE ]

There's a video on Youtube (what a surprise...

) and the angle is definitely wrong, in fact it looked almost as it the horse was going to run out...

Tragic tragic accident.

We were pretty much level with the fence and yes, you could see at the time that the line wasn't good (and a few people around us made the usual Ohh noises as he took off) and yes, it did almost look like he was going to run out.

Oh good grief Sf, how awful seeing it at first hand - I never realised.

I saw it on TV, but tbh, I was on here as well, and it happened so quickly that I didn't see much at all. I looked on Youtube, after this post came up, to see what the debate was about, and I found it quite upsetting to watch. I'm not at all squeamish or soppy, but it was hard watching that beautiful horse approach that fence, knowing what was going to happen next, if that makes sense...

I do hope that the flag poles are changed, but it was a truly freak accident, and we are always wiser after the event...
frown.gif

i think about 15 of us HHonliners were stood at the fence. seeing it first hand i couldnt watch the video. the RL has played in my head since last weekend

I'm amazed they have wooden flagpoles........when I used to jump judge in Scotland the flagpoles were plastic, and I had assumed that all events used them.............

Have said this before but I really don't think plastic flagpoles would have helped in this case unless they were very soft/flexible.
