The YO caught two people riding in one of his hay fields this week. He asked them to leave. They did, after moaning, even though there are no rights of way in the field. They had cut the wire fencing to gain access.

He went back the next day to finish baling and there were three of them! At this point, he lost the plot and shouted at them, saying he was baling for our yard and to feed horses and they were potentially damaging the unbaled hay.
They whinged and argued and said they were doing no harm (even though they've cut the fencing:rolleyes:). I think it's ruddy rude to ride without permission and very rude to ride on top of crops, given the scarcity of hay here currently. :(

The next day, he went to the next door field which he'd already baled, to collect the bales. Some w&nker has set fire to the whole lot. He's having a bad week, especially as his mower broke and then so did the contractor's that he then got in.

I'm dreading what he's gonna charge, given he had little growth and has lost a field's worth of hay due to some random idiots burning it. (ooh, reads like I mean the riders did it, but I don't mean it and surely horse owners wouldn't do that)

It is of little consolation but our hayage yield is double what it was last year ... our YO is very happy.

A bloke on our yard was also caught riding through a neighboring farms cut field. The farmer was fuming and even threatened to call the police on him. Daft thing is, we have 600 acres we can ride on, the only rule being not to ride in with the cows, 2 fields. He's just to god damn lazy to open the gates!!

It is worse than inconsiderate riding it is illegal riding! Not only are they tresspassing which is a civil wrong, they have caused criminal damage by cutting the wire. I am amazed someone would do that, I look longingly but ride past all the now empty fields near us with the gates just left open...........so tempting when you have to ride on the roads but I would never trespass.........

Idiots, to cut through a fence took an awful lot of effort . Dog walkers do this to us as well, they always say they are doing no harm!!!!!

Funny that they do not give me their addresses so I can walk my dogs and ride my horses acrOSS their gardens !

I hate this because it ruins it for the riders (and walkers) who do their best to obey the rules. Good news on the haylage yeilds though!

1) would he reconise the horses, faces you forget, but if you are like me I never forget a horse that I've seen.
2) contact the police and spread the word, that some scumbags have caused this damage and they are horse people(in the most demeaning term).

God, i am shocked that people seem to think it is ok just to cut someone's fencing to get in to their field?! What goes through these people's minds??! I would be fuming too if that were me and it seems likely the people who he told off could well have been the same who burnt the cut hay to get back at him. Sometimes you really do wonder what the world is coming to. People obviously have no thoughts or cares for others do they.

If he catches them again he should demand payment for a replacement fence! I'm sure he would be happy to escort them back to their yard if they don't have the ready cash. A few awkward encounters should put them off. He should also report it to the police every time. Oh and maybe electrify the fence..........

There have been people setting fire to the hay crops in Herts for the last few years.

Police 'think' it is kids mucking about but don't seem to do anything about it

Please make sure your y/o reports it.

Some folks have no respect for other peoples property, complete ases - If they done that on our land, the farmer who owns my yard would probably be taking pot shots at them - he holds no prisoners

It's worrying to think that people would just ride in other people's fields, anyway, never mind cutting the fences. Nobody who has horses in my area would dream of doing it. And as for cutting the fence to gain access - criminal damage. It's people like these who give other riders a bad name!

Ah, but so many quote that immortal line 'Right To Roam...' these days....

He has reported it. It didn't happen in Herts, he bales miles away sometimes and has had this field for a long time but is now saying it's too much hassle.

Saying that, our yard was one where the hay store was set on fire that year, along with Little Munden, who only just broke even about four years later. My YO had a hay store in the field belonging to a business next door and the whole lot went up in smoke.I think there were two others targeted, one in a very remote field. Gutting incidents after all the YO's checking of the weather, going out at all hours to cut, bale, fertilising, maintaining the field. :(

Last year, he had a load of bales nicked, possibly because the fields are miles from the yard and he's a one man band. If he'd only employ some seasonal staff, he'd be a lot better off.

I can't see any problem riding through cut fields as long as they keep out of the hay, but better not to upset neighbours.
I can't understand these riders who carry wire-cutters and think that they can cut fences, is this a troll posting?

doubt it. We have loads of cattle fields with electric wire going around the., and there is always some muppet dog walker that feels like he's entitled to cut the fencing so they can have access. Even though there is a clearly marked footpath going through the lot.

Are you honestly saying that you think it's ok for people to trespass on land?? would you be happy for some complete strangers to come and have a picnic in your back garden without your permission?

farmer should set up a crow scarer in the field;) that will see off unwanted visitors, :D

So we can all come and ride in your back garden then?? Or walk our dogs across your patio?? In the end its trespass!
Sorry, forgot you sassenachs have different rules to us Scots: although we now have "the right to roam" I don't think too many people [no doubt there are some] abuse it.
There is a code of practice, and we are not allowed to go in to gardens and the like, also if the area has previously been somewhere that people have had to pay, then there is no "right to roam" though I don't know if it has been tested. We don't have trespass up here but I do see some notices saying things like "keep out" no explanation.
Lots of Arabs and other rich people bought estates in Scotland, in the 1980's and tried to stop the traditional [grandfather] rights, now they have to provide alternative routes if they don't want people using traditional routes.
There was a test case when Souter [Stagecoach buses] tried to keep riff-raff out of their estate, claiming they had a very large garden, I think they lost!
Farmers are not supposed to chain gates etc, and there is a whole new career in Access Management!

Troll? Me? Are you serious?! I am not a troll, hen!

I would never do this, it's so rude and inconsiderate. The farm drive we ride on opposite our field is used by alot of riders but we first went and asked permission and this Christmas will buy them a bottle of something as thanks, i would also never go on the grass verges xx
