Erm...

In a jumping competition (for example, a 1ft6 beginners jumping class which I *may* have some crazy intention of entering this weekend

) how is the winner decided?!

If everyone went round clear with no run outs/refusals (highly unlikely I would mange this but anyway...) how would the winner be decided?! Is it speed? Technique?!

Either they'll do a jump off against the clock or you'll do the last three fences of the round against the clock if you've gone clear the rest of the way round. It should say in the schedule what rules they are following

You all go round individualy first over the course and it is all based on technique....as long as you get round the course with no knock downs then you are through to the 'jump off'...this means that you jump a shorter version of the course....and to decide who the winner is..you are timed..so the fastest combination from start to finish is the winner....every round you must aim to have a clear round....make sure you approax the jumps straight.
the winer is chosen on the fastest time..hope that made sense lol..any questions just ask hunn!
good luck xxx

If you get a clear round with no run outs etc & you are in say, the top 3 of the fastest times that went clear, you then go into the jump off which is a shorter version of the course, timed exactly as the first round & also you must go clear. The fastest one with a clear round in the jump off is the winner.

Good luck! xx

Some times they will build a longer course and if you jump the first section clear the last few fences are the timed section. If you aren't clear they ring a bell and you pull up.

Thanks folks, sounds like it will most likely be a jump off?
I doubt we will make it round without crashing through a jump or two, refusing a few more, and me probably falling off, but we might give it a go!!

The majority of these 1ft 6 'beginner' classes have a timed section, usually the last 3 jumps, so you normally don't have to go into a jump off. Thats how the pony club runs them and a couple of local shows have run the same. No pressure other than to enjoy yourself.

I don't think they should be called beginner thou as even us oldies like to have a go over the smaller jumps and i'm certainly no beginner - LOL

Bex this might make you feel better.....
I entered a beginers sj class last year, my mare was having none of it at the practice fence, i got her over a couple but wasnt feeling confident so went to withdraw, the guy who was running the jumping persuaded me to go in!! As i got in to the ring over the Tannoy came you only have to get round and you have won everyone else has been elminated... No pressure then lol so off i set 1st jump 2 refusals

2nd jump 1 refusal

ELIMINATED!! lol
Dont think they have ever had a class where every person was eliminated

oh dear keltic!! At least you can say you nearly won

My pony has a strange attitude to jumping at the moment, can never quite predict how he's going to react...so we'll see what happens!!

The 1 foot 6 beginners class local to me is optimum time. This means you all do one round which is timed, and the clear round nearest to the set optimum wins.

Good luck and enjoy!!
