One of my Highland mares had a late filly foal, now about four weeks old. I have never seen such an independent foal! Today, she was standing beside the gate while mum grazed about 200 yards away. As I approached with a couple of friends, she ran back to mum but stopped half way and then ran in the opposite direction to her father when he called over the fence! She is regularly 100 yards or more from her mother and the other day she was about 300 yards away in the next field! She is really independent but has no problem finding her way back when she wants to.
Another foal scarcely left his mother's side, even when several months old. He is a real mummy's boy but now weaned. He seems to have been very insecure, not helped by his dam who would always place herself between him and a visitor. That foal has eaten his mother's mane down to a few inches and taken about a foot off the end of her tail! I don't think I ever saw him more than 50 years from his mother.
Strange things horses! Any explanations why they behave as they do?
