When I worked in the Middle East I wanted to pop over to Delhi for the weekend. I was advised (amidst much laughter) by my Indian colleugues to try Rajastan or the like first as Delhi could be a bit of a.....errr-hum.....culture shock for a first visit to India.
I think collapsing bridges and Dengue Fever could be a touch off-putting but what a shame for the Games and the athletes?
I think anywhere in India can be a shock to the system if you've never been. Delhi is quite advanced really. The traffic can be shocking, and they get smog like you've never seen.
Last night, when watching the news about this, I was wondering why they put so much pressure on the countries to build everything new and so spectacular. The contest for the most elaborate games host is the biggest catagory in the whole commonweatlth nowadays!
I don't think the UK can criticise anyone until it pulls off a good olympics. Most other things we do in this country are a disaster initially (like Terminal 5 for example!).
To be honest no I wouldn't go because of the safety aspects.
I too got a bit of a culture shock when I had to go to Delhi- I was chased by a little monkey runing after my suitcases on the way out of the airport!-
Is a shame for the athletes though that are prepared for it.
