Dalton Piercy is near Harlepool - Tesside. Also down there there is Stainsby Grange which might be available for hire.
Nearer Newcastle - there is Holmeside (Chester le street) Swarland - near Alnwick and Titlington also near Alnwick.
Two new outdoor arenas but very good ones are at Angerton (near lesay) and Todburn near Longhorsely. Also High Plains near Riding Mill which also has fab hacking and a XC course
Then westwards - Kingwater near Brampton or Black Dyke near Carlisle.(both with indoor school)

I am in north tyneside therefore I think the nearest is going to be swarland near alnwick (although thats 25 miles away) Does anyone know what this arena is like? I am looking for some where to hire over the winter months (fair weather rider that I am) - it would be just for personal schooling. I have found one near bedlington which is new - it's very snazzy but the arena surface is sand and a bit deep.

Go and try them - Titlington's indoor surface is super - the arena is however a bit spooky. They also have a super outdoor large arena and two other outdoor ones - and the owners are lovely! Swarland again a lovely indoor surface and not as spooky. Also one outdoor. They both have various events during the year - Titlington more that Swarland. Google Titlington Equestrian and Trianing Centre for info re there.
