Got to the yard last night to find my horses near fore leg swollen and hot to touch on the inside. The night before I noticed a scab which I treated with cleaning and a bit of antiseptic cream, but it’s obviously got infected, or had already unknowingly been infected and just shown itself. So last night I had a good look at it (it’s quite deep) so hibiscrubbed it, dried it and put more antiseptic cream on as well as giving him a bute in his feed and another half sachet this morning. Rang the YO this morning who says it’s still swollen. He’s not lame on it, nor even favouring the opposite leg, but it is sore when touched and is hot. Thankfully the outside of the leg where he previously did his lateral supsensory branch was cool and as normal but my heart was in my mouth when the YO said that his near fore leg was swollen when I arrived at the yard last night!

I last rode him on the Saturday when i did some small cross poles and trot/canter work and he was booted on all four legs so he must have done it in the field sometime when he was turned out on the Sunday. Not sure if he’s knocked into himself or whether he has a blackthorn in it - apparently they have been running around a lot so probably struck into himself with his other hoof.

So instead of using my half day to take him to his first little ‘come back’ jumping class at the local riding club, I have now booked a vets appointment at five pm to take him to the vets for them to have a good poke about in case there is something in there and hopefully prescribe me some antibiotics.

Blo*dy horses, who’d have them! 

OMG you won't believe it! I got to the yard around half two yesterday afternoon to find his leg down quite considerably and hardly any heat in it at all. But I thought I'd take him along to the vet just in case and trotted him up and the vet said he was sound (which I already knew) and that the leg wasn't infected but that he'd just given it a good bash and it may have had a haemotoma which would have produced the huge heat and pain that had been present the night before and would have been consistent with what I described.

I got the vet to check his off hind as well where the latest injury was as it had swelled slightly since Saturday (although it went down again with excercise) and the vet said I was doing very well and asked me if I'd been out competing him yet so I was delighted. I also got him weighed whilst I was there and found out he was 702 KG! He's put on 10 KG since the winter so no biggy really.

As it happens the vet visit only cost me about £35 as there was no call out so I managed to settle my bill and the balance from previously in whole fell swoop!

Felt a bit embarrased by it all.

Well, I still think he managed to throw a spanner in the works, avoid any unnecessary work and contribute to vet's pension fund.
I find animalintex work wonders, I am not a hibiscrub fan [vets here don't use it any more], its OK to clean up a wound, but saline solution does the job too. I keep a few bags of sterile saline solution in case of emergency "in the field", it is at the same isotonic balance as the flesh so should not be absorbed [sry not correct vet lingo].

I feel your pain!

I took mine for a gallop down at the beach and he whacked himself with his opposite hoof. Not a huge cut, so he went for a swim in the ocean to cool off then when we got home I hosed him off and put him in the paddock. Next day leg is swollen as heck and he is lame on it. Ice boots on, betadine scrub followed by antiseptic cream after speaking to the vet followed by some bute. 3 days later the swelling was gone, but grrr! I had to scratch him from a comp and take my pony. Bloody horses!

Chocolate and wine coz it sounds like you could do with some! xx

Thanks for your replies guys! He now has a new problem, the underside of his tail is red raw from rubbing, possibly due to chicken mites of all things!
