has anyone had any experience of dealing with an infected pastern joint? Horse came in with a tiny cut but fairly lame. Vet was called immediately and came out to check the wound, gave antibiotics and advised box rest. Horse got marginally more sound during the week then took a turn for the worse on weekend. Vet came back out and tapped coffin joint and was sent straight to equine hospital. After doing tests vets said that infection was in pastern joint and horse had less than 10% chance of survival and advised to PTS. Vets said treatment was very tricky and usually had very poor prognosis . We decided to operate to flush joint, which was unsuccessful so we told them to flush the joint again as last resort. Horse was then also diagnosed with severe tendon damage. thankfully second op cleared infection and horse is now 2 months post op on strict box rest. He is now about 2/10ths lame (due to tendon damage) but there seems to be no info online about other horses with this type of infection and outcomes. Vets did say it was very rare to have infected pastern joint but someone must have been through this? Any info gratefully received.
Thanks
