My horse had some sarcoids banded (tied off) by the vet last Monday. 2 are drying up nicely and look as they should. I imagine a day or 2 more they will drop off themselves.
However the bigger one is looking nasty tonight. Its weeping and looks infected and yucky.
A lady at my yard who is a livestock farmer gave me a tin of "blue spray" which she said is a very good antiseptic and will get into all the cracks to clean it up properly. She also has given me a bottle of long lasting anti's to inject. I m happy to jab and know that this is probably what the vet would give me aswell if i call him out again.
She really knows her stuff and has told me to give 30ml every 3 days as its long lasting/slow acting anti biotic.
She said its what the vet will do/give etc but i will save on call out and drug fees (she has it all in stock at the farm)
Does this all sound ok?

um, I *think* she said Penicillin He's only a little horse- would it not go on weight also? He's a very poor 15.2

Ah thats ok and not really I'm not a vet but every horse on our yard seems to have needed them at some point (and I have had the job of injecting every time) and even the really poor 15.2 mare (who actually had cancer but no one knew till it was too late :() was on 25mls a day. I dont think 30 would hurt them and its normally penicillin the vet gives but poss different types! I would just worry that its on the sarcoid, I personally would ring the vet and ask for advice as its free over the phone....

I wouldn't give anitbiotics that my vet had not prescribed - there are too many types. However, I think that sarcoids treated like this can look worse before they look better. If it was me I think that I would treat with purple spray and maybe speak with my vet if they did not start to look better towards the end of the week.

I have never had a vet prescribe a long-acting antibiotic to a horse. In the many times I have had them they have always been a daily shot. The stuff your "friend" has given you is for farm animals. If they worked as well for horses, vets would precribe them.

What your friend is doing is almost certainly illegal.

If your horse needs medicating then get the correct drugs from your vet. Takes all the guess work out of the equation, eh?

Thanks- think will go with my original instinct and call the vet in the morning. I'm not really happy with the whole thing tbh.
I know sarcoids can look worse before better but i am comparing it with the other 2 and its like a hole in his skin- the sarcoid is still there with the band on but the area around it is like green slimy meat (sorry thats a bit gross) Its not right and sadly i think its not good either.

And i just got a call from a really worried friend who had been told how ill my horse was by this other friend (the farmer one) so now i'm wondering if her calm "its fine we can sort it attitude was actually fake and he's really bad?? :-(

Some sarcoids have a root and the banding kills the "ball" but not the root, leaving a pit where the now-angry sarcoid can turn aggressive and grow very fast. In the two cases I have done, the root was star shaped. It does sound like you need the vet to me, if not for antibiotics then for more treatment to burn out the root. Try not to worry too much, you could end up with what looks like a very big hole but as long as all the sarcoid is dead, it fills in again fine with very little scarring.

Definitely call the vet and ask their advice. No self medicating now!

If it's penicillin then the norm would be a multi day course. I have never had a vet give a single daily shot of an anti-biotic without it being followed up with either oral or further shots. And penicillin is all the same whether for horses or cows.
OP am I right in thinking you have this horse on a trial?? If so most definitely do not give any drugs without vet's agreement....you could end up paying for a horse you've killed by self medicating!

I actually feel really sick and tearful about this. I was worried about banding them in the first place but trusted my vet and everyone at the yard encouraged it- I'm such a ********* sap i cant go against everyone!
Yes its the horse on trial, this isn't how my new horse was supposed to be- its the most stressful thing i've ever known! and not day go's past when i'm not worried about him.
I had these visions of me and a new horse going cantering across fields by myself not unrideable and needing such a lot of tlc.

Sorry rant over, shameful and slightly spoilt sounding i know I'm just so upset right now!

Thanks to those who replied and helped xx

There is nothing wrong with banding sarcoids - but like anything that is likely to set up an open wound of some sort they do need looking after.

Clearly calling the vet is the correct thing to do here. Let us know how you get on.

Banding sarcoids is the first and easiest thing you could do in trying to treat them. Even if it only clears up 2 out of 3 it will have been worth it. Talk to your vet and I am sure he will set your mind at rest. As for the tlc rather than the riding across fields, unfortunately that is the reality of horse ownership a lot of the time, but hang in there, there is a lot of riding across fields as well!!

Its either pen and strep LA or Ultrapen thats been used. Blue Spray - Terramycin.

I would treat minor problems myself, but something like this would be under the vet, the trouble is that some of these infections can make a wall around them selves, thats what would worry me :)

Ok spoke to the vet... his verdict is...

"When the heck did you become such a worrier? chill out its fine, its normal and he's not dying"

me- but its so awful he's going to be pts and he has a hole in him its all gunky

Vet then described the wound exactly (so i am assured he does understand the severity!) said this is good the sarcoid has fallen off which is the aim (it was on the floor this morning) and as he told me before doing it, it will take a good while to heal properly.

I asked if i should be putting anything on it but he advised not unless i really feel the need to in which case clean with boiled water and dab honey on (as advised above!)
To which i instantly worry about flies but apparently not the honey will protect and kill infection and flies are not so much attracted to sweetness?? maybe i'm thinking of wasps?!

So i am more level headed again and less panic stricken, such a lovely little horse he dosent deserve all this :-(

Oh and the vet had never heard of this type of anti b when i read the bottle name out so v glad i didnt give it!
