My mare had her kissing spine operation 2 weeks ago today. 4 pieces of bone were removed. She is still at the veterinary clinic as she has developed a nasty infection in the inciscion.

She is moving around happily and is almost back to her old self, but the infection is proving hard to get ontop off. The pus from the wound has been cultured again to try and find the correct anti biotic to fight it. The vets assure me that it is not MRSA.

I was wondering if anybody else has been in the same situation with their horse getting an infection after surgery? I was warned that this could be a possible complication after surgery but none the less I am a bit worried as I just want her home and well again :-(

TicTac, Sorry I cannot offer any help on this one as although mine have been operated on in the past they never got an infection, but I wanted to say that I hope your girl pulls through OK. Best wishes wending their way to you!

I hope she gets better soon, its such a shame after all she has been through. Fingers crossed for you x

I've been wondering how your mare was getting on. Shorty is 6 weeks post op, he developed infections and abcess's which proved very diffiuclt to clear up. He was on two lots of antibiotics.
It's very common after the ks op as it's such a difficult area to drain. His took a good month to clear up.

Yes it's very frustrating Pedilia! I am going to bring her home on friday pm. I will have to give her IM antibiotics for a while. I just hope a bit on sun on her back ( I have fenced off a strip of grass outside her stable) familiar surroundings and some good home cooking will bring her round.

Any further advice would be greatly appreciated xx

Yes mine got an infection but it sounds like your one is proving troublesome. Think my boy was there for 3 weeks but it all cleared up absolutely fine. Sorry thats not much help, its so long ago for me now I cant remember the ins and outs!
