my horse injured his leg above the knee. the wounds not deep except there is a puncture wound, his knee was swollen though about 4 times normal size. so had vet out gave him 5 days penicillen and to keep it clean. so been cleaning and cold hosing 4 times a day. but the swelling on his knee has gone down no swelling at the side only on the front, but it feels more fluidy than hard, and is still weeping a lot of bloody coloured fluid. its been 7 days now from the day he injured himself and i think he needs cheaking again as i've never seen anything like this before and am also a born worrier.
everyone else on yard thinks im molly coddling him and it takes time to heel (i know this ). but still think theres too much fluid. hes not been lame at all during this and its not painful when being touched.
am i over reacting?
other than the fluid i wouldn't be as bothered as its not deep as i said but just worried it could be joint fluid/ damage.
good job he had his booster though last week.

if worried call vet....but if hes not lame i dont think it will be joint fluid...for it too be joint fluid the wound would have to make contact with the joint...hence it would be innfected and horse would be HOPPING lame.

a phone call to your vet will do no harm though

best of luck

thanks, no the wound is 2-3 inches higer than his knee joint, vet did meantion its near to his tendon sheath but unlikely to have caused damage as hes not lame. but if i press on the swelling slightly the fluid shoots out of the puncture wound.
just others are taking the mickey saying i wrap him up in cotton wool. which i do really because a damaged horse costs as much as a sound one to keep, and i love him to pieces.

dont worry about what other people say....would be different if it was thier horse.

call your vet and explain that your worried and explain whats been happening. he/she may want to re check wound.

Im a born worrier too, so your not alone LOL.
I would call the vet practice and ask if you could have a chat with the vet to put your mind at rest. He will say if he thinks he needs to see your horse again. Dont tell the others on the yard which if your anything like me will be hard to do as its only reassurance you want.
Knees are notorious for taking a long time to go down, thats what my vet told me, my boys took weeks when his got a knock and if I look closely, its still slightly bigger than the other one 3 yrs on!
Give him a ring, you will feel better after youve spoke to him whether he decides he needs to see him or not.

i think your both right, i will give him a ring in the morning, a phone call won't hurt.
as for the others taking the mickey i'm getting used to that, there always saying my horse has more rugs than they have coats and more boots than they have shoes. but a least hes warm, protected and happy and i'm happy too as a self confessed shopaholic i've one more thing to buy things for.

This could take alongtime to heal. If swelling is below the wound it can not easily drain. Ring your vet they have seen it so they know better
