ok well basically i have a 3 year old filly who is very very well bred and stunning to look at, over a month ago she backed into a wheelbarrow and just very slightly nicked just above her ergot (the tinyest cut/graze ever!) the next morning her leg was the size off a balloon (not joking or extravagating!) it was huge and she could not put any weight on it what so ever literally on 3 legs, as it was so swollen and sore she was rushed up to horse hospital and sedated she then had it, scanned, x rayed and had a tendon tap done,
all was found was the cut had got infected.... that is it.
now a month later after being at hospital for ten days shes still on antibiotics and bute and can put it down but is still very very lame,
the vets have re visited and she went up to horsey hospital again to have it scanned and x rayed again and they found the infection has gone but the flexor tendon sheath is still inflamed.
the vets gave us two options to pts or 6 weeks box rest leg is iced and bandaged and shes on antibiotic and bute still, leg has gone right down but is still swollen around the fetlock.
can anyone relate to this?? or have any info on how to get the swelling down.
her temprement is normall and her tempreture is normal.

My yearling filly was attacked my a german shepheard in her field and a massive chuck was taken out of her hock! Her leg was 4 time the size and I injected her with noricillen and hosed her leg for 20mins every day! She has no tendon damage but hers are still all swollen as it was 3wks ago she had done this! My battle has been getting the wound to knit as you can see all tendonds when she moves leg! Its starting to knit now but proud flesh is also starting! I have her on box rest and she's swollen from hock down I know hose every 4 days and there's a huge improvement! Time is the only healer hope she gets better!

Big Fuzzy annihilated her tendon sheath in early April.
We didn't operate as she is not a good person to be on box rest for too long.
Injected into the tendon sheath (after doing scans, nerve blocks etc) did 2 weeks complete box rest with hosing twice a day & bute - and then 6 weeks of walking - building up from 2 x 5 mins a day till we were up to 2 x 40 mins a day.
She's sound, hacking out for up to 2 hours now but I haven't yet jumped her.

However - there is still the swelling on the base of the tendon & tho it changes from hard to soft & back, I dont think its ever going to vanish - but it is half the size it was when she had the injury.

Picture below the day after she had the injection - its now around 50% smaller than that

Mine damaged her tendon sheath - no infection, we think she slipped in the field.

Mine was medicated (steroids and hydraluronic acid) then box rested and walked out in hand for nearly 5 months. Started with 5 mins a day, and built up by 5 mins a fortnight initially then a week to 55mins twice a day. I got back on at 55 mins walking for one set of walking and started hacking out, and we kept her on box rest until we were trotting for 10-15 mins a day, then turned out into a pen for an hour a day and built up from there.

Still a small amount of risidual swelling 4 years later, but she is also 20 with the associated wear and tear.
