My friends cob has just been diagnosed with an inflammed tendon sheath. She isn't lame but is tender when palpated and the sheath is swollen - this goes down on exercise. The vet has advised 3 weeks without turnout but walking (ridden) exercise along with 2 week course of bute.

Has anyone any experience with this type of injury - we think she did it in the field. Also any thoughts on prognosis and likelyhood of reoccurence?

Thank you!

This has never happened to any of my horses, but I'm pretty sure (from hearing of others) that the prognosis is very good. I'm sure a friend of mine's SJer had a similar problem and is now right as rain.
I don't know about the chance of it recurring though. Does the vet suspect it was a knock?

That sounds like good news! We think she did it in the field - lots of skid marks the day before the welling was noticed! The vet said that most people wouldn't have picked it up, but my friend always checks her mares legs throughly on a daily basis.

my TB had this about a week and a half ago, it wasn't going anywhere with cold hosing etc. so I called the vet out, and he diagnosed a thoroughpin, and that the swelling and heat was blood outside the joint.

His hock was bandaged up and he seems to be ok, he was never really lame on it, he's going for his first turn out tomorrow, so I'm expecting the worst!!

My 12.3hh pony has recently been diagnosed with an inflammed tendon sheath and is off for surgery next week

She originally went lame last june and had scans, x-rays etc which didn't really show alot and as she came sound again shortly after she was slowly brought back into work again.

She then went lame again in december so vet was called again and following more scans, x-rays etc she has been ref for surgery to try and establish the reason for the inflammation.

We've got no idea what has caused the problem - probably bombing round in the field as she does!!

Hope it all goes well for your friends mare.

Yes, my cob suffered with it - and lameness - over five years ago. Was on box rest for several months with 'controlled in-hand walking' (ha!), then finally turned out in the field and came sound. Haven't had any problems since.

Arnica helped to reduce the swelling, cold water bandaging etc.
