I bought a 5 year old Trakehner a month ago, his papers either didn't come over with him when imported or they have 'gone missing', the previous owners registered him with the bsja for a passport whilst waiting for the original papers to come through. This did not happen so I bought him with the bsja passport. He has the antlers brand with a number below. the brand is faint and he is chestnut so can only see it at certain angles or in certain light. My question is, does the number mean anything and is there any way I can trace his breeding or where he originated from by the number?

thanks in advance - tea and cakes if you got this far xx

thanks for the links, I will check to see if there is a V under the antlers, must say it is hard to see and haven't noticed one - is this bad? I'll look tonight and contact the fraternity. I have no show name and he is registered with the BSJA under his stable name. Apparently he was imported aboyt 10 months ago - how without the papers I have no idea, but would he be chipped if it was that recent?

thanks

If he came over from Germany there will be no upside-down V under the antlers. It is only the English-bred Trakehners that have this brand - my German Trakehner just has the dot between the antlers.
I asked my vet about the number under the brand because I had been told that is refers to the area in Germany they were born in... but he dismissed that and said it doesn't mean that. But for the life of me I can't remember what he said it did mean! Will find out for you cos I haven't been very helpful!
