Hi,

I'm thinking of buying a 3.5T horsebox, it's only for my horse so no need to worry about going over the weight limit so much, but i was just wondering if anyone could shed some light on how much the upkeep would be on average? tax, insurance MOT etc.

Also, i only have a budget of about £6,000, do you think you can get a decent, reliable one for that much?

Thanks very much

You may struggle to get a decent one within your budget. Due to the new licence laws regarding the weight restrictions imposed on newly qualified drivers 3.5 ton vehicles are going for a premium.

You could probs get an alright private buy. Other wise your looking at 15k I would be worried to buy a new 3.5tonn on that budget as you wonder what corners were cut?

There's a few girls on my yard that have 3.5's they bought for under 1k and they've been back and fore to england (from wales) and they go fine...

Depends on what kind of Van its on. There are quite a few about on horsemart and ebay within your price range, just make sure you get it thoroughly checked out!

I got mine on an S reg LDV Van, brand new conversion for 5.5k and use it loads just for my one horse, its fab!

I suppose it depends what you class as decent and reliable?

If you are looking for a nice, newish master conversion or similar then you will struggle with a 6K budget. If you are thinking of something older then then you will easily find something.

I purchased one 3 months ago for 3K plus £400 for a new exhaust system. It is a D reg VWLT35 diesel. It was converted by prestige in 2004 so has a newish box on the back, massive and in good condition, plus a respray in 2004. The chassis itself is okay, new tyres all round the engine has done 98K. It starts well, gearbox is good, brakes good. A bit smokey to start with.

The plan is to run it until is costs too much to maintain at which point transfer the box onto a much newer chassis.

Insurance & breakdown is under £200, tax is £170, MOT around £50, servicing and parts depend on what needs doing.

I have one, its a LDV400 its a H reg cost me £1395 with 12 months mot, it needs some work, body wise and a repaint but its a good sturdy truck.
With 3.5 ton trucks make sure its upto weight as some of the Transit types are classed as 3.5 ton but are only actually 2.9 ton, you need to check the vin plate inside the cab as this gives the axle weights, my log book states my truck is 3.5 ton, but the axle weights in the cab state front axle 1500kg, rear axle 2600kg so my trucks maximum laden weight is 4.1 ton.
