I was looking to buy a 3.5 tonne ford transit type box but after reading peoples views on the weight they would carry without going over the 3.5 tonne would be no good to me. All the boxes i liked said they would easily carry 2 x 15.2 horses but now thinking i will probably need a hgv license and look for a bigger box.
I dont know anything about taking this test so could anyone give me a bit more info on prices and time needed to get this test. Many thanks

Class C1 (7.5 Tonne)

This course is for learners to enable them to drive a Class C1 (rigid) vehicle.

The ideal way of learning to drive an LGV is by attending a block course of training. This allows us to structure the course to meet your individual requirements as identified in the free driving assessment. Our aim is to gradually develop your skills and knowledge over the prescribed period of training enabling you to reach test standard by the completion of the course

A driving assessment will determine the duration of the course. A1 Training Services are able to offer courses flexible in duration depending on the results of the driving assessment.

The driver training course will include:

On the road driving tuition with a DSA registered instructor
Manouevring exercises
Awareness and Planning
Highway code
Vehicle safety checks

Hiya - i did mine a couple of years ago now and did a 3 day intensive course with my exam on the 4th day. I studied and took my theory test myself before i went on the course.

Days were 8-5 with a half hour lunch so really long days. It cost just short of £2000 including my theory exam and my practical exam, its not a cheap thing to do! I would advise doing the intensive course though as i think hourly or two hourly lessons really arent long enough as you dont get to grips with it until a couple of hours into the lesson each day.

Just to add, the price above was for C1 + C.

I did my HGV about six years ago. From memory it cost about £700 for the instruction and test.

I also had to have a medical and sit the HGV theory test which were both extra.

I drove with one other guy and the instructor from about 10.00am - 4.00 pm for four consecutive days and then took my test on the 5th day which fortunately I passed.

I asked around a bit and was recommended to the school I used as they were used to having "women who wanted to drive their horses around"!
