had a little pow-wow at the yard tonight about fundraising, last year we did a fancy dress ride in aid of the air ambulance and we're trying to think of other ways to fundraise, so hopefully without sounding daft, can anyone enlighten me on how a race night works, i think i have a basic idea but would welcome some advice if anybodys run one before, thanks

we ran one for charity and basically you hire someone in who runs it and has all the equipment. the guy we got came, worked with the pub to set up the videos etc, had all the bet slips etc. he had a set of races on video, before each race he'd call out the horses and jockeys. people bet at a table you run, and theres a mathematical formula to work out what to give the winners.

all we had to do was take the bets and give the winners money out. he had a really simple system so it was easy to work.

we raised over 1900 euro for charity at ours. we had thirteen races and we got people and companies to sponsor the race name, jockeys names and horses names. that raised the most money. you will need someone to lay out a programme with alkl the information in it, but its fairly easy, and theres loads of templates

you could technically do it yourself to save money, but it was way easier to get that guy in. he was great at drumming up excitement and encouraging people to bet, he really made a night of it..

You could get sponsors for your races, and name them in the racecard.
Its a lot of fun, and raises heaps of money.
Slick operation at well organised paying in and paying out tables is the key.
I helped at a few.Get an organiser in is the best way agreed.
You could also auction the runners, ie get the punters bidding for a horse on a couple of the races, you might be surprised how bidding wars start!
And make food to sell like sarnies and drinks?
Hope you raise loads in aid of the very best cause.

Used to be a f/t dj, kj, quiz master and race night compare. I still have all the gear. Dont do them any more, but I'm sure I could make an exception, depending on your location etc

Alternatively, I could provide you with a friend who still does them f/t, sure I could get you a deal.

We were often able to run them FOC and take a certain percent from each race and a sweep-stake card.

If you're interested, PM me with your number and I'll give you a call.

on a side note; in case anyone else is reading this, you are not allowed to do ODDS. As soon as you start using odds in turns into licensed gambling and you must have a license. It has to run like a tote.

Thank you, thats a very kind offer, i think we may be quite a way from you though if your location is still the same - yours says berkshire and we are south wales...

I dont mind travelling (gets me away from the mrs for the night :D ) but I also have family in south wales, one of whom also used to the do race nights with me.

As I said, alternatively I may have other ways to help you out.
