Hiya Guys,

A friend of mine is thinking of getting a whippet and wants more info about the breed (so I figured you would be the people to ask!!). She has looked online and found out about the need for exercise and the potential for timidity or destructive behaviour if brought up wrong, but I hoped to find out more info from 'whippet people'

We have hungarian vizslas which she adores, so I don't think the 'bed pinching velcro dog' behaviour would be a problem

However she does alot of travelling (around the county) with work and hopes to take the dog with her- would a whippet mind being a travel companion?

Any info/advice much appreciated

They are cheeky fab versatile little dogs with big characters, make all round fab pets and have gentle nature, they are bed huggers, they are pretty much like greys like a good little sprint and will sleep aslong as u give them, they hate cold when standing still but they are hardy when on the move and running around.
They do imo do better with another doggy pal, as they do naturally snuggle up to other dogs, or humans, they would be fab little companions to travel with aslong as the heat is on in the car

Mine are hardy little whipps and I have never had seperation probs with mine, but they dont go everywhere with me, they are treat like the rest of the pack.....I actually prefer a x of a whip and a grey.
They are fun little dogs to have around, they do have a nifty talent of bin raiding and bench surfing, and can be picky eaters if owners pander to them.
Acomfy bed.....preferably the owners is a must for a whipplet

i'm on my first (and hopefully 2nd soon!) whippet and he's adorable!

he's very loving (especially if you let him sleep in the bed

) and will follow you everywhere. mine does have separation issues and won't tolerate being crated but is brilliant when with us and wouldn't swap him for the world- even though he did chew up my prada glasses yesterday

from my experience they don't need masses of exercise so long as they can run around and go mental for 15 minutes twice a day (but obviously do walk further than that!!

) and then they'll sleep the rest of the time. major issue i;ve found is their spring- they jump on worktops etc very easily- so keeping them from chewing stuff/eating leftovers is harder than with some other dogs. i'm totally converted to them and would definitely recommend them!

Thanks for your replies guys, and Diggerbez how did you get on today??

One more quick question (which I can't find an answer to online) why do greys and whippets wear muzzles? Is it to protect small furries whilst out walking? Or are they vicious beasts wrapped in a beautiful lithe body??

Mine have never worn muzzles and I have not seen any whipps with them on, but maybe they where racing whipps, usually x racing greys will, they are sight hounds and the sight of anything running/moving will get their attention it's in their blue print, believe it or not they usually run to their object of desire do a large circle and run back but obs greys are big powerful dogs so if they decided to pick someones prize poodle up

because they thought it looked like a rabbit then obs the muzzle stops this, but alot dont wear them at all.
But basically to protect small furries

firstly..they are very addictive, one is never enough
they are ganets..eat anything, including any kind of poo, keep food well away
alot more sturder than people think
some have very high prey drive, one minute they can be docile the next a killing machine esp if spotted anything small and fury...best to go for a showbred if looking for a pet only
some can be chewers
do not over exercise until approx year old
thin coated so they will get cold in the colder weather..hence should get a coat
mine wear muzzles if coursing/racing
love company, hates being left for too long
