Hi
could anyone given me more info on york horse sales?Being looking into going but put off by reading about 'sad state of horses'. Reading the list of previous horses sales list sounds like nice horses to be bought.
advice please?

Its a sale, some are a bit rough, but to be honest its one of the better sales, and I wouldnt expect to see anything to horrific :)

It's not bad, I've taken a few there myself over the years, never seen anything in a bad state but I don't go regularly. There's of course plenty of dealers but some nice ponies do go through. The tack sale is worth sitting in on too.

They also do the best beef sarnies ever!! :D

wow, ive never seen any sorry states at york sales! usually a bargain to be had (if your knowledgeable) and the tack sale is good (and food! :) )

if people think york is bad - i hope they never vist any of the real horse markets - gulp!

York is definitely one of the better sales but it does have it's fair share of bin end dealers trawling very poor ponies through the ring. The last few times we have been the prices have been quite poor for most horses going through but then the odd one has gone for a really high (and surprising) amount. Many are simply not sold because prices are too low but I reckon a fair amount of these will be sold out of the ring after the sale. Forget the beef sandwiches and try the hot pork and apple, yum:)

Food very good at Murton [ York Livestock centre] , and the horse sales always packed - would I buy? Probably not - did so once, but knew the seller. Mostly, like other everyday auctions theres horses there for bad reasons - not great rides, imported from Eire /France and in poor condition. Prices are low, and some dealers make money buying from there and selling on. I do think, tho, that every sale has a bargain ..would wouldnt trust myself to find it!

Some of them do look a bit rough but there are some good ones!

I have bought two from there previously both sold by mel brittain a local racehorse trainer (sold under the guise of northgate lodge) and ended up with two beautiful tb's (3yo and 4yo) for less than £500 each. Depends what your looking for really!

HI
thanks to all who have taken the time to reply.was told by a local horse dealer that personally they would 'never' buy from york sales as most of the horses have serious behavioural probs or are drugged to hide health issues.Just wanted to hear from people on here who have attended the horse sales.

Most that are for sale at York are warrented, it says in the catalogue and the auctioneer states it, if they are not.
Agree with the poster who says if you think York is bad then don't go to an unwarranted sale!
A friend bought from York, still has the boy and he is a superstar, mind you she put a lot of effort in after she got him home.

One of my friends bought a nice piebald forward-going cob from York Sales and has had him 18 months with no problems other than that he's a bit keen! I suspect he's fairly high mileage but he's a nice boy and suits her well. She did, however, previously buy a mare who had some temperament issues, was lame and turned out to be pregnant.

I mentioned I've sold there before but completely forgot that one of the ponies my daughter is riding was bought there!! He was a real bargain young NF, was in good nick just green & has turned into a little pc superstar in 6 months!! Wish I had found him myself:D

Not a bad sales at all, you can get some good quality horses coming through the ring as well as the usual poor specimins. I would never buy as dont have enough experience to know what to look for but my YO has bought some cracking horses over the years. Having said that YO's moto is only spend money on a horse from the sales if you are prepared to throw the money away.
