After lots of tears over the weekend I have decided to sell or loan my two miniature shetlands. It has been in the back of my mind for a while and a large vet bill has finally made my mind up. I will probably sell Cassidy and might already have a great home for him. However, I really don't think I can sell Norman (if you knew him you would adore him) so have decided to try and loan him out as a pet or companion. What are 'normal' loan conditions - i.e would I have to pay for anything still? He is cheap to run - lives out, maybe a bit of hay in the winter, trimmed feet and wormers. Any advice much appeciated.

My take on loaning is that the loanee pays for everything. Be that worming, trimming, vets bills, grass keep, hay, feed etc.. The loanee has all the responsibilities of a person buying a horse. If you pay for insurance I would personally prefer to keep paying that myself.

What ever you do get a written agreement in place that way you both know exactly what has been agreed.

BHS have some information ... http://www.bhs.org.uk/Content/leaflets.asp?id=20&page=Welfare&area=4
