Does anyone have any experience of any of the following??

Peritonitis

Abscess of the Liver/abdomen

Malignant Tumors

My good friends pony has been admitted to Liphook to undergo tests to find out what is wrong.

His symptoms have included:

Pyrexia (intermittant temp is yo yoing all over the place.
Loss of appetite
Dehydration
Depression
Lethargy
Movement of his hind legs has altered

:(

I lost a pony to lymphoma :(.
Nothing more to say really except when the symptoms presented themselves, he had less than a week left to live.
Very sad to see a pony go from looking incredibly healthy to very poor in a matter of days.

Two years ago I went to catch my NF mare and she was rolling in the field, I thought how cute but as I got closer she didnt get up as expected. As I was leading her back in she started to roll again and I thought she was colicing and rang my vet. The vet arrived in about 20mins and he examined her thoroughly rectally and found a huge tumour inside her bowel. He could feel it attached to the bowel wall so there was no chance it could have been anything else. We were left with no choice but to put her down to save her further suffering. Looking back I tried to see if she had ever shown any symptons there was no blood in her droppings and the only thing I could think of was she used to clamp her tail tight when approached by another horse. My vet said she might have had low grade pain towards the end but could have had it for a long time.

I know your horse is at Liphook for tests today and I do wish you a happy outcome and I know its difficult but try not to worry.

This is what is worrying me.

He went out to a show 2 weeks ago and did 3 classes and was out on a really long day. Came home and we thought he was tired from this.

He then had a Flu jab the following friday and seemed fine and went out again to a show on the sunday did one ridden class and went well in that but when he was in the inhand he refused to move. He was withdrawn from the 3rd class and came home.

Looked throughly depressed so i suggested that his temp should be taken. It came out at 40.6. Thought it might be a reaction to the flu jab. Rang vet and spoke to them and they agreed.

Temp taken twice daily and was going up and down seemed perkier on thursday and the vet was up for another horse and she checked him over and took temp which was down to 37.? Great we thought, on the mend.

He was very depressed when he came in on sat and the vet was called (senior vet) he came and took bloods and rectal exam. Given Finadyne and some Anti b's

Fast forward to monday vet up again pony looked perky and temp was down. looking good

Temp taken at 3.30 back up to 40.? vet called results of bloods point to the above 3 things

Is there anything that can be done for any of these things. How are they treated?

Thank you. He hasn't shown any signs of pain at all a bit weight shifty on sat when i suggested to my friend to call the vet.

He is not my pony but our yard everyone is like a family and we all worry about each others like they are our own.

I think of the 3 things you mention, only peritonitis is recoverable from and that in itself is a long haul.

<<vibes>> for pony and your friend.

Update from the horsepital.

Peritoneal tap came back with a tiny bit of fluid but clear and otherwise no cause for concern.

Scans were inconclusive.

Temp is normal at the moment.

They have taken more bloods and he is on broad spectrum anti b's (assuming baytril/gentomycin ?) They are also doing Viral tests.

He is going to stay in and they are going to monitor him.

Lets hope they can come up with something conclusive
