Doe anyone have a horse by appaloosa stallion Cochise II (Think spelling right!he was at the Rowberton Stud in North Devon.
I think he has now sadly passed away but any information on him would be great as i own a gelding by him and was interested to know if his offspring have similar traits.

Having now been the owner of a spotty ponio for a year, and listening to others stories,I am starting to think they ALL have similar traits, namely slightly bonkers, rather clever, and somewhat over sensitive lol.

My lad's by a cornish appy stally,so no help on the one you're asking after, although the name does ring a bell for some reason.

I know someone on another forum who has an appy gelding (unless the same as jay said that person is you lol),she's sort of north devon way so is a possibility, will ask her when next see her around.

Another one who has heard the name, but don't know any of his offspring, BUT can agree about the very clever and somewhat sensetive. Also I find that they tend to get bored easily :D

Hello,

I have a mare who is related to him, I think he is her full brother, I will have to check her paperwork.

What traits does yours have? Is there something in particular?

I totally agree they are normally all sensitive.

My mare does have her little quirks, (a few too many too list, nothing BAD tho - I wonder if they are the same as yours?) although to me they are nothing as she is viceless and 100% safe. She can spook and sometimes be moody - but that is a mare thing I think.

Feel free to PM me with details on your traits you have if you do not want to list them here.

Always nice to chat with other appy owners. :p

Hi,
Thanks for the repiles. i have a very spotty appy gelding that i have had for 7 years. I have done and won everything with him over the years and for the most part he is a star. However on the odd occasion he will spook at practically nothing and run away from it in blind terror (he has done this twice on the road) He is also a bit of a leader in the field but loves his pack, although can become too attached and gets very upset when i take my other gelding away from him getting very stressed and runs round stable. He also will no longer travel in a trailer. I have had numerous vet checks and there is nothing wrong with him and the vet thinks it is in his head!
On the positive side he is very loving and is a real character, loving to carry things and picking up or knocking things over just to be cheeky!

Hs main thing is he loves attention and likes to be at the centre of everything!

my appy gelding is by puzzleman who is by cochise II.
He is very intelligent and gets bored easily as well. He is scared of NOTHING! like sticks his head in a box and waves it around. when i run round his field with plasic bags waving behind me he chases me and tries to eat the bags. Plus walked over tarpaulin straight away and started scraping it with his hoof and trying to eat it.
He hasn;t really spooked apart from if hes in a hyper mood. He tends to stare at stuff and drag me closer if something scares him so he can touch it with his nose.

Saying that, when i was backing him last year. after a few sessions, he spooked for no reason and started broncing till i came off. then exactly a week later i sat on him and he bronced straight away. sent him away to be backed and then he was fine after that.

He is the most loveliest horse i have ever had though and certainly very talented with amazing paces :)

Me too..........I have a mare related 10yrs now bred a super foal ( not spotty ) and she is a superstar herself, wins to numerous to mention - I will never sell!!

Hi Sparky,

No my mare is nothing like yours, or Rowy's for that matter. I wished mine was loving! All the other horses I have are but not this one, she is indifferent.

She can be funny to catch sometimes, can stumble on bridlepaths if allowed to amble, she hates cows, will dish on the front legs if not ridden well, may spook but not often and it is never more than a little flinch, the worse thing is that she does not ask for cuddles, the others will knock over my buckets while I am poo picking and generally fuss me while she stays away. After a ride she loves to rub and cuddle a little but after that she does not want to know. I know the owner before me would push her head very firmly away if the mare invaded 'her space'! I think this is something that has been instilled in her rather than bred.

She is however, very responsive, light, respectful, mannerly, kind, forgiving and 100% safe.

Sorry I was not helpful.

I think the picking up of things is an appaloosa trait. The old Appy mare used to pick up anything within reach, this included me! by my plaited hair  and she managed it :D The current one was spotted (sorry) the other day, picking up one empty water bucket and putting it in the bucket that was next to it! She is spooky, but traffic proof, she does need to be kept interested, but has excellent manners in most things (can drop a shoulder) and is very affectionate. I also find that they tend to be one person horses, if your their person, then they really do own you. :D
