I have just picked up an inhaler and some steroid inhaler thingies from the vet. She thinks he has an allergy. So I get home and read the instructions but the actual inhaler is for people. So my question is how on earth do I get that over horses nostrils and mouth?!! Vet is ringing me later so I can ask her then but am I being thick or should there be some kind of adapter?

I have an inhaler for my mare. I use a 'Babyhaler' spacer - the silicone bit that is supposed to go over the baby's mouth fits neatly over one of my horse's nostrils and I cover the other nostril with my hand to deliver the drug.

It's fiddly - I recommend getting some help the first couple of times you use the inhaler, because you need three arms to do everything. Once you and the horse are more accustomed to the drill you can do it on your own. The other challenge (if you use a spacer) is hitting the button on the inhaler at the right time for the horse to get the drug into their lungs.

Oooh thankyou. That is exactly what they gave me. He is a spooky lump of a horse as well so we should have an interesting time this afternoon!!
Does yours respond well to the steroids?

Works like a dream. She has some kind of pollen allergy and when it affects her she pants and heaves like she's been round the Grand National even though she's just been out in the field. Within seconds of administering the steroids it gets better. I hope it works as well for you!

One of the ponies at the rescue I volunteer at has a inhaler for the summer.

She's fine with it these days, but I'd definitely recommend an extra pair of hands for the first couple of times. One thing we found was that she found the puff of the inhaler quite scarey to start with so talking loud and jolly whilst using it helped to distract from the noise
