I've never done any showy showy stuff but I'm considering taking my Arab to a couple of inhand classes this year at the local shows - just for fun.

What do you do?

Just trot up and down?
 
Yes, you all walk around together, then the steward stops everyone, and you all take it turns to trot around the ring.

Then the initial placings, and you would bring the horse out to stand for the judge, walk away and trot back, trotting round the ring until you are behind the other horses and then walk back in line.

Local level tend to prefer arabs to be shown with less pizazz then affiliated level, where spinning at corners, and more presence is a good thing.

PS - at a local level most judges seem to prefer show ponies....
 
If you go in a Partbred, Anglo Arab & Arab mixed class, be prepared to be last, sadly you never seem to stand much of a chance up against them. But as for what you do, ditto what ApacheWarlord said.
 
I entered my Arab mare in an in hand class at a very local level show, and came last. The judges said she was too "demure" and they were looking for more attitude. So her perfect manners went against her! We do dressage now!
 
Ditto what the others have said, you will need a bit of sparkle to get noticed.

When doing your individual bit, walk away from the judge, turn you horse to the right away from you, rather than round you and trot smartly back without breaking into canter. As you get near the judge open the trot out a bit more and float off extending as fast as you can run!

Make sure you stand up properly for the judge and not in a heap with legs in a bunch.

Have fun! You will often find some really good animals against you at local level so you will need to get yourself noticed.
 
when you stand up for the judge, make sure you have practiced and stand up properly, left hind leg slightly behind the other and front legs square. Hold a piece of paper or something in your hand and hold it so your horse arches his/her neck in. The judge won't mind if you fiddle about for a little while getting them to stand nicely.
Make sure as soon as you turn in your individual show that your horse trots straight away. Practice at home, and remember that when you are walking round and you think the judge isn't even looking you are showing your horse off not just walking them to the field!

I only ever showed at local level once when I first got into Arabs many years ago with my yearling colt. I was placed last and told that I had no right to bring such an impeccably bred animal to a local show where young children would get upset at an adult winning. Was told I was "pot hunting" :mad: We only went for the experience of a show atmosphere before we went to proper arab shows.
Unless you can plait your pure bred up to look like a part bred or get a sympathetic judge!!
Arabs attract so much animosity its unreal, they are like Marmite. from then on I only competed my arabs against other arabs.

I'm just thinking about having a little fun. Don't care if we come last. I KNOW he is the mopst beautiful horse in the world - I don't need a rosette to prove it;)

He will be 26 by that time and he is pure bred, 98% Crabbet. He looks so good (on the bespoke mineral diet I've been feeding him) that I want to see how he'll do against younger horses:)

I'm not sure if you have to qualify but you should aim for the Crabbet ch'ships at the Nat. show at Malvern end of July. At 98% he qualifies and you are up against Crabbets only.

I'm itching now to know how he is bred ??? :)
 
Do you mean in arab classes in local shows? Or small arab shows? Or in general classes in local shows?

We've found that local arab classes in local shows seem to be very small (i.e. one entrant) or non-existent :(

For fun, I took my well-bred little arab mare into an Open Pony class at our local RC open show and it was an Equestrian Life qualifier and we came second out of about 6 (I wasn't even expecting to be placed as she had a spangly arab halter on and I was dressed in black trousers, white shirt and black waistcoat while everyone else had "proper" ponies and were dressed more traditionally). But I suppose it depends on the judge. We did get a lot of people staring at us as we were the only arab on the showground at that time :)

Just remembered a friend of mine is all arab showy showy and involved with local shows....so I'll get the skinny from her on what to do:)
 
Oberon, did you find out any more like you said? I'm really keen to have a go in hand with my old girl, she's 22 and half Crabbet (Bright Blue), half welsh.

By the way, were those Endurance pics taken at the Tebay ride by any chance?
